I was thinkin bout streamin ricin after work.
Going to start from scratch, so it will include stuff like picking your own colors for the terminal, writing gtk theme from scratch, CSS, etc.

Anyone interested or should I just get drunk and do it alone instead?
>>
>>53881927
Problem is that no wm supports this as far as I know. A few have good rounded borders, but not ones that actually cut into the window rectangle like mine.
>>53881951
Cheers.
>>53882002
Yeah, I just saw. I already use shadows (makes it easier to see the border of a window when two overlap). I tried using very small white shadows and at low opacity it did improve things slightly, but it still wasn't that great. Probably time for me to get to this hacky X stuff.

idk man, ive seen a lot more desktops pop up with carbon copy dotfiles than ive seen new shit.

The gtk and css in particular im seeing a lot of cloning, i can only assume its because people dont know the process ot make their ideas from scratch.
timelapse is a good idea for post production thogh

I notice that vim and emacs+evil are very popular among CS students, config monkeys, and new programmers, but are gradually replaced by straight emacs, sublime text, and others as you move up the hacker ladder. The same goes for rice, until you have the best computer wizards using nearly unriced desktops and editing setups that would make /g/ scream in pain.

Why is this?
>>
>>53882676
Vim is the best shell editor
Sublime text 3 is the best gui editor
>>
>>53882002
Post wall please

>>53881743
oh youre using a shell with tab completion. Carry on.
>>
>>53882676
good programmers do more writing and less editing and don't need an editing-oriented editor like vim, good programmers don't have time to re-rice new installs because they're too busy programming and end up with shit desktops as they get new software but don't configure its appearance

problem solved

Same here, almost - wanted to run 7 on this thing since hey,a Centrino 1.7GHz and 2GB of RAM (searching the model number on those Kingston DDR SODIMM sticks brought up they're 1GB each) don't really sound that bad...but then, the GPU factor came in and ruined everything - Radeon M9 isn't supported under 7 or Vista. So,XP it was then. I can't even complain about this laptop, there are no quirks, apart from the battery which drains fast but that's because of age. (I was actually surpirsed it still works,my 2 other "retro" laptops (Compaq Armada 110 - Pentium III and Fujitsu-Siemens Amillo D7820 - Pentium 4 2.8GHz Northwood) had their batteries dead.

Also,it has a few nice features, like WiFi card (integrated - Intel 2100) and Bluetooth (also integrated - Ambit T60M665) which can be activated using two buttons near the front.

Apart from that,it was very cheap ($2.55) - it came in a half disassembled state (ribbon cables were all intact but at the same time none of them were connected on the MB)and it had no HDD. I had to use some spare 10GB IBM drive I had (which I plan to replace - finding laptop PATA drives here can be a ungodly pain in the butt!!!). It also has S-Video output, but I haven't tested it (lack of hardware, but I can test it using some long wires)

Pic related, how it looks at this moment. I have another XP box by the way. (P4 HT 3.0GHz - crazy enough it runs on a 845E motherboard)

>>
>>53884154
shit thats a nice retro machine desu, i want an old x40 or something desu for retro purposes, and yes finding batteries / PATA drives for any of those old machines are very very difficult to come by.

XP is still good, if you use your common sense its a really nice OS to use for browsing and general purpose, i have a Pentium 4 machine with lubuntu 12.04 on it but i might try out XP for the nostalgia, will probably need to upgrade the ram from 1G to 2G though but its hard to find this specific type of ram.

Yeah, the keyboard is pretty comfy (and nice as well) and XP is pretty easy to work with.

Speaking of which, this laptop has an sticker on the lid saying "InviLink". What's that? Its logo is some kind of satellite.

Other than that,I still remember the days I first heard of Longhorn, and the first build I used of Longhorn - 4039.

Still have an ISO of 4039,from WinWorldPC. Apparently, the old TPB rip I had was useless, since it would die in the middle of copying - this one seems to be a clean ISO.

If I'll ever have the time and skill to do so,I might set up one of my laptops such way that I dualboot LH 4039 and Xubuntu. I have been thinking of using Archbang (Arch Linux + Openbox - before somebody says Arch sucks: hey,I don't care if it's Arch. As long as it's Linux, and I can use it,there's nothing to worry of.) if Xubuntu fails to work.

Again, for $2.55,I'm actually happy that I found this laptop. One problem I need to fix though is the touchpad not working - I suspect the ribbon cable, since the pins seem worn on one end. Until then,a small black/yellow Phillips USB mouse will do. (I didn't mention, but this laptop doesn't have a PS/2 port. Only USB.)

well if you ask people you get also diffrent opinions. and then you have to try them out too.
>>
>>53884627
yeah but those opinions explain to me what people like in each one

for example, i've heard good things about i3panel, and i know i don't want to bother with ratpoison because the reasons people like it don't appeal to me

How do you know whats important for you if you never try it out and dont make your own experience?
Try one, find out what you like about it and what not, search one that does it better.
>>
>>53883581
You can yeah. Although a fair few WMs can do rounded corners at the top, and most of them render them better than fvwm does too.
