What's a good entry Linux distro? I found that the work software has Linux support.
As much as I'd like to recommend Trisquel, you should probably pick something like xubuntu or mint to make.it easy on yourself.

I'm on Windows 7, I perform windows updates regularly, and it's still Windows 7 right now.

Ubuntu or Fedora. Both have pre packaged set ups for most DEs. So for instance if you don't like the GUI that unity provides in ubuntu you can just flip over to KDE or GNOME or XFCE etc. If you're new that's the most you'll care about. Also they are generally the most straightforward to install. Enjoy your newly found freedom.
In a few months Windows 10 will be the single largest Linux distribution.
