Hackintosh general. How's your rig holding up, /g/? Moved on to 10.11 yet? Any upgrades?

Used to love Hackintosh-ing until Yosemite came out.

It's a major pain in the ass to get my audio drivers working, my GPU working, and getting the OS to use all four cores of my CPU.

OP here on 10.10.2. No problems with a GTX 970, i5 3570K, VoodooHDA kext.

alrthough to be fair it took me a solid weekend to get the CPU running overclocked, messing with the voltages in BIOS. I was a newb and diddunt know what I was doing.

OSX looks like shit on such a crappy screen.

Anyway I'm looking to install OSX on my Elitebook 8460p, however it seems it'll require me to get a new wifi module and I read that there are problems if you have a 1600x900 screen. Also I doubt the trackpoint will work on OSX
>>
>>53860685
Voodootouchpad and voodopps2 get most toothpads working. Also there are some multitouch kexts (drivers) out there for a lot of touchpads. I also don't believe 1600x900 is a problematic resolution.
>>
>>53860330
That DVD drive looks ugly as fuck with that Fred Perry case. Also, why are there those stickers on the monitor? Disgusting poorfag neckbeards.
>>

I see. Turns out there is a 'probookinstaller' that has configurations for most Elitebooks. I only need a certain wifi module.

>>
>>53860773
That's pretty cool, WiFi USB's work as well but you have to use a WiFi Utility app to make use of them. The app doesn't support enterprise WiFi logins like the kind at my uni so you should go with that airport card which uses the normal Mac WiFi settings.

OK so .. i was on 10.10.5, apparantly you can't use the old Chimera bootloader anymore .. so I tried clover and it just fucked my shit up.

Should have stuck with 10.10.5, fuck this El Capitan shit. I only wanted to update 'cause I got a 970 and wanted the most stable drivers.

Can I get Hackintosh running on my Pentium N3540 + GT820m notebook?
>>
Ages ago tried it, had problems with it. Went with AMD processors so it was shite. Recently I bought a new PC with a haswell processor (yeah I know haswell circa 2016, I'm a cheap bastard) to play some games, then I tried El Capitan.

It's been a month and a half, and I only used Windows twice for like, 2 tools that I didn't really need to use.

Also my GPU performs better here than it does on any current distro due to the fucking limbo state AMD GCN 1.0 cards are in right now with drivers. It's fucking brilliant.

The only thing I dislike is that I bought the wrong motherboard, so there's a high risk of me bricking it if I flash a modified BIOS with Ozmosis. ASUS boards have a file verification thing and I can't bypass it, but if I were it may be risky. As much as I want a more "native" OSX experience on my PC, I just don't know if I should do it.
>>
From what I gather people here have problems with both el cap and clover. I'm fine with it, though it's somewhat kinda slow to boot (takes about 10 seconds on SSD).

I heard el capitan was better in terms of performance. Am I being tricked here? I didn't really try anything older than this.
>>
>>53863206
How to dual boot on modern computers for anyone who's installing both:

1. Make 2 partitions, both HFS+
2. Install gentoOSX
3. Install clover
4. Install Windows on the other partition, through UEFI
5. Rename a tiny file in EFI/Microsoft/boot called bootmgfw.efi as bootmgfw-orig.efi
6. Copy EFI/Clover/CLOVERX64.efi over that boot folder and rename it to bootmgfw.efi

Done
>>
>>53863498
that's absolute trash instructions, just install refind to the EFI partition and then you are good to go. I got Windows 7, Linux, and OSX installed on the same hard disk without any issues.
>>
Hey /g/

I have a HP laptop with a nice penryn P8400, 9600M GT and 4GB of ram.

Is good hardware for a hackingtosh in compatibility terms ? Want to use it as a desktop.
>>
>>53864023
I suggest you look around tonymac to see compatibility with each part

>>53864017
I'm just saying, that's what I did and it works fine

Of course you may have a better system
>>
>>53864069
my comment was a tad hyperbolic but seriously refind is by far the best EFI bootloader out there. clover is trash and is only good to boot hackintosh.

when most people make hackintosh's do they put an os on it that looks a lot like osx or is it actually osx?
>>
>>53864333

I can only boot with -f

Also I get the following error message:

The system extension “/System/Library/Extensions/GenericUSBXHCI.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update.

What do.
>>
>>53864381
It's OSX, may lack support for a few programs (like facetime) that are easily replaceable

Remember that the hardware on a modern Mac is not so different from anything you could build yourself. You could in fact buy the same exact parts.

>>53864294
Depends on what you have and what you're looking for. In my case I needed to retask an audio jack (basically use a speaker out as headphone out), and that took me half a morning because there's no program that does that. If you check for compatibility out of the box you might not have any issues at all.
>>
>>53864399
Download a kext utility and install that kext in particular.
>>
>>53864501
out of curiosity, is buying all the same exact parts in a mac laptop then assembling it any cheaper than just buying the laptop?

Contrary to popular opinion, the hurdles are not in the installation process or even with the hardware, but with little things that you need to either enable or disable if you're already used to a different behavior in a different OS.

Let me explain:

For instance, I'm used to repeat characters with the keyboard by holding a key. That shit doesn't work unless you turn off a feature that allows you to hold a key and press a number to get a different character. It's kind of like when you hold a key on a smartphone keyboard. Except it's a fucking desktop OS.

A lot of confusion comes also with the keys option, command and control. Every application tells you to press the symbols, but your keyboard is a windows keyboard so at first you might not even know what the fuck are you supposed to press. In Adobe applications it's almost infuriating.

You might also find that by default, and without a visible option to turn it off, OSX has mouse acceleration enabled. You need smoothmouse to get rid of that. It takes like 3 fucking seconds to get it and all, but c'mon now, most people don't like that.

I also had to bind my mouse side buttons with extra software to back and forward, because it doesn't know what those are.

Also that by default, opening a compressed file extracts it to a folder. You can't just preview it. It extracts it right away.

A laptop is a different case altogether. I meant basically a computer, not taking in account the screen which is pretty much what you get when you buy an iMac. If you were to buy a Mac Pro for instance, you may not get the same fucking desk trash can but you can still get all those parts individually.

Since I use hackintosh as my main operating system I have been thinking of buying one of those little magic trackpad thingies. The first gen because fuck you Apple I'm not going to spend more than $100 for -any- input device no matter how cool it is.

But still fucking undecided if it's really worth the money. I've seen reviews about it being the bees knees with a shitton of gestures and all of that. I've seen reviews saying it's nowhere near the quality of a macbook trackpad. I'm torn here.

I use it with bettertouchtool and it's fucking amazing. I can control media with gestures, open specific folders with gestures, and have it do whatever the hell else I want with gestures.

And scrolling just feels so nice. You'll never want to use a mouse again for scrolling.
>>
>>53865106
Does the system work fine otherwise? Because in that case I would just delete the fucker. I had the same problem with a few kexts in the past.

Regarding scrolling I use this smoothscroll application (shit I wish I had this on any other operating system out there to be fair) and it scrolls quite nicely. But I believe you, I tried a macbook pro about a year ago back when I was still in this shitty "mac products are gay" mindset and that trackpad was fucking pleasant.

I think I'll grab it.
