It's actually pretty simple. Certain kinds of programmers tend to use certain kinds of systems. .NET and Java developers working on enterprise software tend to use Windows. Frontend web developers working with HTML5/CSS/JavaScript tend to use OS X. People who have programming as both their job and hobby tend to use Linux.

It's definitely a nice compromise between Windows and Linux, but there's some obvious shortcomings. No native package management is something that any programmer will feel the sting of, and Homebrew is a poor substitute for apt/yum/pacman. And it's weird you would say OS X has "better support", when a cursory glance at a site like GitHub would show that to be false.

More specifically, In my field (3D graphics), OS X's 6 year old OpenGL stack is a non-starter. And unlike Linux or Windows, a user cannot simply upgrade their drivers or libraries for better support.

I'd say that software devs use linux more because they like to think they are speshul snowflakes who can't use the same tools as the rest of the people. They need to feel they are in control of everything on their computer, even though most of them use software built by other people. But hey, "I compiled my own kernel" is the same for them as "I built my own kernel". Gives them an extra illusion of control and competence, when they're basically playing with lego pieces made by others.

Like, you can come up with whatever bullshit title you want, but unless you've passed the PE exam and gotten officially licensed by the state you are not an engineer, nor my you sign off on any kind of engineering shit or anything of that sort. You can do engineering work but not independently and you will have to have all of your worked signed off on by an actual licensed engineer.

That's possibly an even more retarded approach. At least that's obvious, recursion is going to fail depending on how deep your call stack is when you first invoke it which is probably more dangerous than just flatly refusing to operate on numbers above a certain size.

no, it's not more retarded than something that only works when one of the numbers is 10 or less. though if she was allowed to use division she should've just divided it by 1 over b
>>
>>53855781
But... thats wrong, you're adding the value of a to a every time, eventually thats multiplying wrong numbers without using an extra variable, you're changing the value of 'a' every time, and then adding the changed value to itself, which gets exponentially bigger.
For example. 10+=10, 20+=20, 40+=40, and you miss values like say, 10x3.
>>

Yeah, that would be the obvious way to do it if you really couldn't use direct multiplication for some reason. It's just funny that a guy suggested a better way to write a joke piece of code and ended up suggesting a stupid approach.

>>53855826
Instead it's something that only works on numbers less than... well who knows? Depends where you are in the call stack. There's still some limit after which it's going to fail, you just don't know what it is until runtime and it actually blows stack.
>>
>>53855222

w/e pussy, you probably just don't 'get' recursion anyways
>>
>>53855850
That fixes things like recursive fibonacci but it doesn't help in this case, you're still going to need to add b stack frames since Product(a, n-1) won't be know at the time you're Product(a, n) is called.

Most women can't be effective programmers for the same reason they can't be effective leaders or comedians. From birth they're coddled by society and sheltered in a bubble that separates them from the realities of the average person. Most women never have to learn to work hard because they get everything handed to them. They never learn to stand on their own two feet because there's always someone willing to protect and care for them.

Of course, when the woman is ugly or fat most of that privilege goes away - which is why you only see fat or ugly women programming or in positions of power.

Javac doesn't do any kind of heavy optimization, no shit it wouldn't.

Java is JITted, and while I fucking hate JITs, you have to give them credit where due. Oracle jvm would probably optimize this out, not just to a for loop, but to imul. Seriously.

You can't hold women to the same standards because of the patriarchy. The system is inherently sexist and so you have to give women help to counter the patriarchy.
However, all these bonus programs and help for women are a result of internalised sexism. The admission that women cannot compete in the same arena as men and need a handicap to compete is the admission that women are inherently worse at activities than men are.
This is intolerable for feminists so they take this internalised sexism and translate it into 'The Patriarchy'.
I believe that women can compete on the same playing field.

Women are being held to a high standard, higher than men in fact, solely for being women. They are expected to be expert programmers from day 1, otherwise they are dismissed as being idiots, despite men making just as many mistakes when starting out.
>>
>>53856433
>You can't hold women to the same standards because of the patriarchy
This argument uses the same logic as a junkie saying he can't quit drugs because of Satan.

But I'll say that women can not compete on the same playing field as men. But a woman can compete on the same playing field as some men. And vice versa.
My original argument of "a coal miner can't code because of his penis" stands. Most men can not compete on the same playing field of other men either. I will never be a solider, I can never compete as a cage fighter, but the soldier and cage fighter will never be able to do some of the things I do.

It is the individuals responsibility to go after what they want in life, not the society around them to give it to them.
>>
>>53856433

Agreed wholeheartedly. There is no logic behind the idea that women cannot be as good of programmers as men, but every time you see a woman programmer in the media or fiction it's pointed out how it's a big accomplishment.

How is a normal woman being able to do the same thing as any other person an accomplishment? When you see a person who's missing a leg finish a marathon run, that's an accomplishment. Because they're handicappped. When you see a woman programming and treat it the same way, you're reinforcing the idea that women are mentally handicapped and we need to handle them with kid gloves and give undue praise just for participation.
>>
>>53856477
It's easier for women to get a scholarship, more women are going to university now because of that... Despite that many women are wasting those specialized scholarships on gender studies and other such nonsense. Some of those women with specially subsidized degrees are then getting positions in tech companies where their free ticket is at least somewhat frowned upon by others who didn't get that kind of support.

And you're saying that women are held to a HIGHER standard? You're joking, right? I can tell you that the patriarchy didn't give me a free university education and then help me find a job. Say what you like, but the patriarchy is more than compensated for and any backlash felt by women at work is making up for how easy it was for them to get there. If you can't handle people being dicks to you after you get your free education and easy job, I'll gladly take it off your hands, because people have been dicks to me all my life-- yep, that's with my penis and everything.
>>
>>53856556
I didn't get that kind of support and I don't agree with equal outcome. I don't even agree with equality in most cases since equity is more important.

But yes, in my experience as a professional having worked in several different programming positions, women are held to a higher standard. I'm not talking about what the media says, or what universities do, I'm talking about the professional working environment.

It's not even about people being dicks, that's just how people are and I'm well used to it, it's about my work being given less worth because of my gender.

What does that have to do with my post? I like working and I'm good at what I do. What I don't like is being treated as incompetent just for being a woman.

Your reply demonstrates exactly what I'm talking about because, apparently, solely because I'm a woman, I don't want to work and must have mistakenly worked my way up to where I am now, most likely by getting help from a big strong man.

It might have something to do with more women being whiny babies than men. I dunno. You can tell men to march toward cannon fire and most of them will do it. My wife cries for no reason sometimes. I know first hand that men are expected to do things without complaint that are never asked of women. Don't think for a second that women always have it worse just because men don't complain about it, which isn't to say that you, specifically, haven't been treated unfairly, it is to say that men are also treated unfairly, but are less likely to complain about it. I can tell you that, as a man who calls just about everyone on their bullshit, I have been passed up for promotion in favour of others who are incompetent by every measure of the word, and this being no secret.

Possibly it's different in programming, as I doubt the same situations I've been in would arise. But the first job I ever had, women weren't expected to go anywhere near the garbage if a male was around, and if they were asked to, they would actually whine about it. (I never saw a single male whine about changing/taking out garbage at work)

Quit your fucking whining.

When I was in high school, I spent hours every day honing my assembly language graphics routines. I was recognized by my CS teacher as top of my class.

You know who got recognition for his computer "accomplishments"? The fucking weird guy with glaucoma who kept his head literally two inches from the screen in order to see. He didn't accomplish anything interesting. But every little thing he did was met with beaming approval and accolades. Why? Because he's a fucking retarded looking mutant.

Same thing with all the "whiz kids" articles. The average age of a successful tech entrepreneur is something like 38 years old. But that never gets reported on. Meanwhile, the local 14 year old shithead who fixed a virus-riddled computer at a local accounting firm gets a whole article written about him. Remember those Diaspora fucks? The "whiz kids" who were going to upturn Facebook's world? They didn't accomplish jack shit.

People just looove to root for the perceived underdog. If you want accolades and approval, fake some kind of severe disability and roll around in a wheelchair. Talk like a retard and make some mediocre software. You'll get societal approval soon enough.

Bullshit. They're held to the exact same standard as anyone else.

Source: professional software engineer for 20 years. Worked with several women. Most of them great. A few of them completely incompetent. Nobody cared that they were women.

The one thing I've noticed about several women is that they're god-awful bosses. They freak the fuck out when there's any push-back. Push-back against a man and he'll listen to the technical argument and either agree or lay down the law and we go with his decision. Push back against a woman and it's HOLY FUCKING SHIT MUTINY YOU HATE ME BECAUSE I'M A WOMAN. They won't even listen to any objective argument, it's her way or the highway.

That's not to say all women in leadership positions are that way, but every damn woman I've worked for (three so far) has been that way.

Oh, and my first job in college was at a deli in a grocery store. Everyone else was a woman. Most sexist bunch of fucking assholes I've ever worked with. Two of them were great. The rest were horrid, sexist asshole bitches.

Oh, and here's some career advice for everyone:

You will ALWAYS be treated like some kind of aspie fuckwith. HR will ALWAYS be condescending toward you, like you're some temperamental child. Your bosses will ALWAYS be condescending cunts who act like you're just making up reasons not to do things because you're lazy (not because of obvious, objective, technical reasons their ideas are doomed to failure).

So, what's the solution? Be a complete aspie retard. Show no humor. Show no social grace. Be a blunt, over-confident asshole.

You'll have jerk-off coworkers who interrupt your day all the time to ask retarded, bullshit, irrelevant questions. "What happens when [obscure feature X is selected] and [unlikely scenario Y occurs]?" They'll actually expect you to know completely arbitrary things about the some shitty 200k line, decade old product you inherited. You know how many times they'll come back when they find out you were wrong? None. They'll never come back, because they were just wasting time in the first place. They didn't want to sit at their desk, so they came over to waste your fucking time. They won't even remember the answer.

So, make shit up. Be confident. Be an assertive asshole. Don't just offer your most objective reasoning and allow your superiors to make the call. Decimate your political opponent. Make a mockery of his stupid idea. Talk around the issue enough and everyone will stop listening, but they won't remember enough to make a reasoned counter-argument.

Embrace the aspie.

Well then there's your answer. That type of thing isn't going anywhere any time soon, because the dimorphic differences between the sexes are substantial enough that jobs will have gender preference probably forever.

I wasn't asking for your sympathy, by the way. I concluded a long time ago that sympathy is useless to me. I was just using my own anecdote to better illustrate my larger point. That is, if your biggest problem in your working life is that you get treated like a girl, maybe it's not so bad, yeah? At the very least, you could start your own company if you don't like it. Anita Sarkeesian has no marketable skills and made half a million dollars, so surely you could get something going with the feminist safety net.

I don't buy it. I simply haven't met that many sexist programmer types. I know a few profoundly sexist people. They're generally not bright enough to be employed in any meaningful technical position (even the guy who makes $100k per year maintaining shitty VB).

>Not entirely relevant, but even outside the workplace whenever I tell someone I work at company X they always assume it's some management role. Even when I do explain I'm a programmer they act like I don't know what I'm talking about.

Uh.

1) I was coming back on a plane from interviews several years ago. I was wearing a suit. A rowdy bunch of bachelorette party-goers guessed that I was in sales. If you don't look like Mr. Robot, people will assume you're something else.

2) Men treat other men like shit all the time. Look at fucking /g/. If you aren't running Arch, using vim, and writing C (or some functional language, preferably doing ML) then you're a borderline retard. The entire industry is RIFE with tremendous disrespect for each other. Christ, it's like you've never just sat back during a meeting and watched the men interact. Programmers are insecure cunts who take every chance to put each other down.

3) People have absolutely NO FUCKING IDEA what programmers/software engineers/developers do. They literally don't even understand the phrase "software engineer", so I have to follow with, "uh, programmer..." At best, they'll parrot whatever they've heard/read in media most recently, "oh, you write mobile apps?" in some kind of weird attempt to impress.

Do you have any idea what it's like to date people (women) who NEVER HAVE A FUCKING CLUE what you do? They'll never realize how brilliant your solution was. Your boss doesn't care. You GF doesn't care. Nobody ever notices

Because your code outputs wrong answer for every input except b = 0.

>>53858324
I had different code in mind. Yours is wrong anyway, for b<=0.

It's meaningless because however women are "good" at computers, it never translates into real world accomplishment or success, and it's not because of some vast male conspiracy, it's because women lack some intrinsic characteristic that prevents them from doing anything truly grand or novel.

We've had computers for 30 years, now. Anyone could visit a computer store and buy a computer and documentation. And still--no major technical accomplishments by women.

I assure you, if there were, males would just nod and say "that's nice.'

Where the friction comes is in women using the state to bully there way into and shit up male enterprises and male achievements, and in their bullshitting their pathetic and mediocre "successes" as exemplars.

If this women and other women are so great, let them just get together and make their own company. I absolutely GUARANTEE you that no men will bang on the door and demand to be hired. No one would care, and it would fail, because women are fundamentally defective.

The original code didn't take <=0 into account, for all we know it could be a function on natural numbers only, so bite me.

An obsolete language designed by a team of 100% MALE engineers.

The team was "led" by Grace "computers are too hard they should be ez ;(" Hopper.
