Hey guys so my dad needs a new work PC because the laptop he was using broke. I told him that he can save money buy buying the parts separately and putting it together on your own.

He basically just does Microsoft Word, browses the web, and streams video.

What hardware should be sufficient?
>>
Actually easier to just get an off-lease system off of eBay for like $150.
>>
>>53850799
anything under 100$
>surprisingly not lying on /g/
>>
By an ex-business machine for less than even that.

I got an old Dell that my mum uses for that for £10.

It's got LibreOffice rather than MS Word, but she doesn't know the difference.

I want him to have new harder that will last him a while.

>>53850858
So should I get an AMD APU or just like an i5?
>>
>>53850895
>I want him to have new harder that will last him a while.

That hardware will last fine.
>>
>>53850915
I'm saying I don't want him to use a dusty old PC.

budget
budget
budget

we cant halp without it

AMD apu would serve just fine, but if theres budget for nice 24" IPS monitor, decent stylish case, SSD storage + HDD for backups... and then theres still leftover space.. then why not go regular i5, it is faster...
>>
>>53850923
Then clean it.
>>
>>53850799
>save money buying the parts separately
That's only true if he manages good deals on them. On the other building the computer will yield a machine that lasts longer (better PSU & case) than your average non-corporate prebuilt.
>>
buy a second hand i3/i5 optiplex
>>
>>53850940
No, I want newer hardware and know I can save money buy buying the parts separately.
>>
>>53850987
You could save even more money buying used.

Stop being such a consumerist.

So now wanting to buy new hardware makes me a consumerist? How does that make sense. Everyone's a consumerist.

$230 - dell u2414h
$50 - microATX case
$40 - seasonic 350W PSU
$60 - gigabyte mobo
$40 - 8GB RAM
$90 - 250GB SSD (crucial mx200 / samsung 850 evo)
$50 - 1TB HDD
$190 - i5 6400
--------------
$750

Actually I'd go for a used system for cheap.

But If you have money to throw in the garbage build him a decent PC based on an intel CPU/integrated GPU combo (less bullshit with everything, case, power supply, drivers, everything)

People with your dad's workflow will appreciate a good monitor, decent keyboard (not mechanical with flashy leds, but something other than a 3$ office supply garbage) and a good mouse or even a trackball (absolutely goat for desktop navigation/office use) more than a powerful gpu-heavy rig.

Cordless keyboard/mouse combo would otherwise be a nice idea too, less cluttered desktop.

Make it silent (a decent cooler with a high quality fan will get you a quiet as fuck operation 100% of the time on any but the high-end CPU that's not overclocked).

Throw in an SSD for the OS and software and a large HDD for everything else.

Introduce him to some decent backup solution so (depending on how dumb your pops is) his work/OS doesn't go to shit everytime he downloads some shady hot_pregnant_woman_creampied_shemale_xxx_360.mov.exe.

That what I'd do If I had the money to buy me pops something useful.

Hmm he doesn't want to pay more than $250.

I just I'll just try and find a nice used PC for him. What are some recommended models that have stood the test of time?
>>
>>53851120
>$250 budget
You're not getting anything built for that price. Windows license costs $100 alone and knowing old people they'd object to a torrented version.

Buy
Used

This would probably be enough for what he does.

That CPU is out of stock

Where to buy used??

Online???

Christ you're fucking retarded.
>>
>>53851200
Well no shit online. I was asking if you knew of any places with good deals.

Wouldn't this processor be sufficient?

Get the fuck out please, retard.

>>53851342
Are you really implying that a Dell Optiplex won't last a long time? You get the fuck out faggot.

You can find used Optiplex's on eBay for less than $200.

Thanks for taking the time to put a build together. I think I'm just going to get a used Optiplex 790 from eBay.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I just ended up buying a Dell Optiplex 790 with an i5 2500. I think the old man will be pleased :)
>>
I'm also planning to get my uncle a new computer. He also does similar stuff. What is the most cheap processor that can handle browsing, light software and youtube and that will last for a while?
>>
>>53851675
Really any Dell Optiplex on eBay should be fine.
>>
>>53850799
Go to Amazon and search for Dell Optiplex computers. You're welcome.

I found a pretty good deal on eBay

You don't actually need a really good fan. The intel fan is pretty good on the i5-6400 (or whatever the cheapest skylake i5 is). It stayed cool as fuck even while running prime95 (which is not part of my dad's workflow btw).

The money you save on an aftermarket hsf can go into a nice silent case with a bunch of fans.
