Fax machines used to be pretty common too. What's your point?
>>
Yeah, a decade ago when you couldn't stream high-quality music without advertisements over LTE.

Why the fuck would you want to listen to distorted, ad-filled, shitty-music FM on a smartphone in 2016?
>>
>>53845689

There is an app for FM radio tho
>>
>>53845746
>>53845751
>>53845794
I agree with OP.

You may question the audio quality you get from FM, the ads and shit, but the truth is that FM is still widely used all around the globe.
FM radio coverage is also vastly superior to the 3G or LTE ones.

Phones without FM radio support are paradoxes because those devices are supposed to be technologically advanced and should be able to do that shit.

Well, most SoCs on the market are Radio-enabled but support gets disabled in firmware or software, because hey, they want you to pay your mothly subscription to some paid streaming service.

Fuck the jews.
>>
>>53845689
>FM radio
soon to be obsolete in my country since they're ditching FM completely here in favor of DAB+
>>
But wait... can we transmit DATA through RADIO SIGNALS somehow??????
>>
>>53845689
Like the fax in an all in one printer.
>>
>>53845908
>, because hey, they want you to pay your mothly subscription to some paid streaming service

Or having the feature adds a small bit more complexity to their software design, testing, etc. and is an obvious corner to cut.
>>
>>53845941
Well, some companies developed hardware to repurpose the empty TV white space left by the digital transition as a long range broadband solution, so I would guess the answer is yes.
>>
>>53845933
Yeah, and I can't wait to see it blow-up in your arrogant Scandinavian faces.

Especially in a country as big and mountainous as Norway, DAB coverage and reception are shit compared to the more reliable FM that needs way less transmitters.

At least you're stimulating the economy by forcing everybody to buy new radios for their cars.

Also, modern phones don't have DAB+ reception either.
>>
>>53846012
Netherlands, actually.
>>
>>53845689
goy, how are carriers supposed to make money on you if you dont use internet bandwidth to listen to radio??
>>
>mfw htc includes a radio app that only works with headphones

Listening to the radio is just comfy and reminds me off the days where you couldn't just plug your phone/flash drive in your car.

>Underage calling others underage to fit in
The fact that you haven't ever owned a car, let alone one with only a radio + cassette player, makes me think you're the one here who's underage. Cassettes are also shit imo, listening to the same 10 songs over and over again made me nauseous after a while.

They never built in a proper antenna though, they just used the headphone wire, which makes it only work with FM. this made it useless to me because the only time I listen to the radio it's an AM station

Is this the reason why the software makes you plug in headphones in order to hear any radio stations in FM? I assumed it was some stupid copyright limitation so only one person could tune in to a station, instead of many through the phone's speaker. Your explanation fits better.
>>
>>53848234
Yep. It uses the headphone wire as the antenna, basically. The FM-via-headphone-cable thing is electronically simple and cheap to implement, which is why phones and MP3 players threw it in for a long time. Doesn't work for AM though, I forget the reason.
>>
>>53845689
It's ${CURRENT_YEAR}, man.
You're supposed to stream it from the cloud™
>>
>>53845689
Why would they sell you music apps when you can get a radio for free. Can't.

Nice design

>>53845689
Does the FM radio app use the "radio" antenna?
>>
>>53845988

incorrect, nearly all cellphone chips are SDR capable of receiving FM with no additional hardware.

I loaded the international ROM on my LG D415 and the radio app would crash because there was a lockout on the US hardware. All other functions work fine, but, because asshole cell providers want to squeeze every penny out of you they make streaming the only option.
>>
>>53847632
The headphones are the antenna.
>>
>>53845689
I read somewhere a new LG phone will have a DAB+ receiver. Way better than FM.

Pretty much every FM-enabled phone I've owned allowed you to switch on the speaker. You did have to plug in your headphones, though.
Although I had an old Samsung slider phone with a built-in FM antenna.
Reception was usually shit.

Ah yes for when I want to hear 2 minutes of any song interrupted by inane chatter and ads.

You live in Freedomland and have never lived abroad
Here in the old world public FM radio is actually interesting and worthwhile
>>
Fuck off OP, I don't want my phones to have a feature that nobody would use while increasing the price.
>>
>>53846056
All phones use the headphones as an antenna, thats why you need headphones...

Also fm radio is kinda average. I wish we had a radio drama station...
>>
>>53845908
FM radio also takes less battery than streaming music/internet radio
