So, I bought a 7970 off ebay. But the seller has bombarded me with messages about getting it, tried to make me not use PayPal to pay for it. I'm going to be picking it up in person today.

This has given off a bit of a bad vibe. He could just be new to ebay and not know, but could be someone trying to scam me. Before I leave feedback, I'll want to give the card a thorough test to make sure it is 100% working and no issues.

What's the best way of testing the card out to make sure everything is A-OK?
>>
It's a good sign that he agreed to see you in person.
>>
I would never buy video card from hands now when i know that people reanimate them with heating when gpu starts to die. It is a temporary measure, gpu can completely die in a week or half a year. Fuck faggots who sell those things to save "muh money!"
>>
>>53841445
he probably just wants to save the fees he'd have to pay to paypal as a seller. no reason to worry that much.
>>
>>53841445
wihtout paypal there's no way you could possibly get your money back when it fails
>>
>>53841493
Maybe so, but I'd want to be sure that the card is 100% working.

>>53841496
Yes, which is why I have insisted on using PayPal.
>>
>>53841445
>What's the best way of testing the card out to make sure everything is A-OK?

just run some benchmark programms on it
>>
>>53841515
I'd want something to test all the vram, all the core.

>guy off the internet seems shady
>I'm going to go meet him with some money

Jesus Christ. Enjoy getting murdered.

You know most second hand cards are just a few weeks from death due to excessive Bitcoin mining, right?
>>
>>53841507
just take your PC.. fit the card, install it, and put it through stress tests.

If its ok, the guy shouldnt have a problem with waiting a bit.
>>
>>53841496
he'll know where the guy lives though. A scammer wouldn't do it like this. specially not for such an old card.

you don't want an angry dude hammering your door and smashing your windows for a 100$ gain. fuck that.
>>
>>53841535
>implying they're meeting at the sellers house.

If he can't use PayPal don't buy it. It's simple.
>>
>>53841529
>>53841535
I've paid via PayPal. Any issues, I can raise a dispute through them. I insisted even though he wanted cash.

You understand that this card is more than 3 years old right? You know that cards die mostly every 3 years or so? Why would you buy this shit when Polaris is on the horizon?

This, I have cards more than a decade old that work fine.
>>
>>53841560
Hope you didn't do it through the "friends and family" program.

That`s because Jews weren't as desperate as now for your money. They WANT your cards to fail so you buy a newer one.
>>
Man, I wish I could trade my card for something equal on the nvidia side. That one OP, that one sucks DICK on linux. It really does.
>>

Everything sucks dick on Linux.
>>
>>53841535
>such an old card.
According to AMD it isnt; they have rebadged it now three times.
>>
>>53841988

I'm just saying in case he wants it. GCN 1.0 card users are fucked on linux for a while.
>>
>>53841445
He wanted to you to tried it first. Bring something like external dock GPU/test it.

>>53841962
If this is a Tahiti card, it works great with radeon kernel drivers+radeonsi x driver.

Why don't you sell it?

>it works great with radeon kernel drivers
If you ignore the part where the performance you get out of radeonsi is so terrible you can't even watch 4K video without the card stuttering up the ass.

Nvidia is the only realistic way to get a non-sucky GPU experience out of Linux, currently, and even then Nvidia is still quite sucky. (Like the part where they _still_ don't support fbdev)
>>
>>53842216
Everybody I know that would be interested in it already has a better GPU.
>>
>>53842057
I haven't yet managed with a 280x to get a DE with animations not stuttering on it.
>>
>>53842205
I have a HD7950 reference model lying around too.

Yeah I don't get the three year meme. This thing has been on virtually 24/7 since 2008. Doesn't even have cooling on the VRM's or memory pads, they're bare.

I should put new paste on this thing desu.

gotta love how their idea of power management is to clock it at 500mhz
>>
smell it, jokes aside even the smallest resistor gives off a burned smell 2-3 years later
>>
paypal just takes ~20% of your shit as fees as a seller, OP. the buyer protections are good for buyers, but for small sellers, it sucks ass.
>>
>>53843286
If he didn't want to accept PayPal, he shouldn't have said he would accept PayPal.
>>
>>53841664
>Why would you buy this shit when Polaris is on the horizon?

OP is a poorfag who can't afford to get the latest GPUs all the goddamn time!

Get your money back and go buy some Midol.

Buyers bring the money, which is the fuel that makes the whole damn process run.
