why would i choose Debian over Ubuntu?

Cause they didn't sellout to Microsoft.
>>
>>53813446
for a desktop machine you probably shouldn't

albeit canonical is now officialy recognised as enemy of your freedom, so i wouldn't advice using ubanto either

are there any valid reasons?

Are you new to Linux OP?
Debian is the superior choice. Everyone says Ubuntu is good for beginners, but Debian was the first distro I used and am glad. There's a slight learning curve I guess, but nothing you can't figure out online
>>
>>53813518
What about it?
>>
Debian is certainly more robust but not as user friendly as Ubuntu

how so?

It's a complete OS but it's more "basic" than Ubuntu, so it requires less resources.

>>53814000
Only to install few things like proprietary drivers.
>>
>>53813446

You shouldn't, unless you're an advanced user with very specific reasons for doing so.

I tried installing Debian. It's currently defaulting to some goofy new filesystem. I repaved with Mint because it wasn't worth the trouble.
>>
I just installed Debian and I have to say everything so far is ezpz. Did a net install which even set up xfde for me so I had a lean desktop from the get go. Package manager is pretty simple too, idk what you would need any more shit for.

Use Arch Linux unless you're a total retard.

You'd know the answer if you had a reason to use Debian

Server stability
No botnet/tracking
Minimal install doen't force xorg and a DE down your throat
>>

Any time. Ubuntu is merely a fork.

Very good question indeed Sherman.

Both distro's suffer from having founders that have/had mental instability. Sadly they attracted those who were likewise.

Because you're running a server.

So people don't dogpile on you in the desktop threads for running a normy OS.

They're now friends with Microsoft.

if you hate "muh bloat" etc do a minimal install with --no-install-recommends
>>
>>53813446
Ubuntu is a downstream from Debian . So it is the fucking same (but with Unity)
>>
>>53814770
debian is just as bloated if not more...just saying package count wise.

they both have net installs

ubuntu also Xubuntu minimal which is nice
>>
>>53814702
Portage is life.

unity is pretty nice these days dasu fampai
>>
>>53813446
If you want stability go for debian.
If you want updated packages go for fedora.
If you want the easiest path into linux and don't care too much about the actual system install ubuntu.
>>
>>53816030
It's okay if you use your PC at the same level as a mobile device.
It (and many other UIs) is terrible if you multitask sufficiently.
>>
>>53816053
Not a unity person. but i dont think it's that bad. next release you can change the side bar to any side bottom top etc. i think that is a plus. i wont use it regardless though. if I go that style i'd rather use gnome 3 desu.

That has nothing to do with the shittiness of unity.

Well as of June all Ubuntu installs that are not LTS versions will be upgraded to Windows 10, not sure if Debian users will be afforded this opportunity.

1. Driven by community interest rather than corporate interest.
2. Adheres to a social contract rather than a Shuttleworth contract
3. It is the base that has stood the test of time and the giant's shoulders on which ubuntu stands, it enabled ubuntu.
4. No unity, no ads, no trends just for trends sake- ideas are voted on and decided based on merit and community input.

That is about it, I'm glad Ubuntu exists and I think it is a great distro personally but Debian is closer to my heart.
