Does anyone actually use Linux as a desktop OS in the professional world?

At least my current employer, my last employer and most of their clients did.

A professor of mine who works at LHC uses gnu/linux, and according to him the team he's in uses gnu/linux for running their data analysis framework (root, it was originally made especially for the LHC experiment)

Pretty much yes.

I'm going to university to study CS in September, should I install Linux and can someone give me a link to a guide on how to?
>>
>>53793880
My company uses OSX because it's Unix-based. There is the option to bring your own linux laptop, but Windows is out of the question
>>
>>53794412
>should I install Linux
You should get a list of required software and get whatever they recommend
>>
I work as backend dev for a mobile game company. I use i3wm running on ubuntu daily.
My previous job was as a backend dev for a hosting company, i used the same setup.

fedora at the office, arch at home

sometimes arch gets little 2bleedingedge4office, and spend half to an hour fixing when you should be working isn't that cool as it sounds, is not really often but Murphy is a bitch
>>

-My professor runs Debian
-Sysadmins run Linux
-Most of worlds defence forces run Linux (not sure about burgerland, who spies on themselves anyway? I heard reptiles are using their version of RHEL)
-Linux is used in Engineering environments (NASA, CERN, Fermilab Toyota etc)
-Also used where heavy video rendering is required (Pixar)
-NYSC cucks
-Amazon uses linux

Filling up excel sheets is not the only job out there, wage cuck

IBM switched most of it's workstations to Linux. They have an internal brew based on RedHAt. They, of course couldn't switch most of the mentally retarded managers over who know nothing about computers. Management had to stick to Windows. Which should tell you everything you need to know about today's IBM.

Desktop? yes. Workstation? YES.

Work for a big SaaS company, you can choose Windows, Mac, or Ubuntu. Ubuntu is only available for desktops so most of us have a MacBook Pro, or a MacBook Air with Ubuntu desktop.

Also I was at Denny's last night/this morning and when they restarted the monitors in the store I saw them booting up fedora

Rather most of scientific researchers, R&D labs, delopment engineers use linux. In fact top IT and engineering companies's real engineers are mostly on linux.

But yeah, ppl tweeting shit on twitter and Facebook as a job and calling it social engineering or whatever will never need to use it.

I work at google and everyone here uses either mac os or windows. In fact, you're not permitted to connect a linux/bsd device that isn't chrome/ium based to the internal network due to security issues. I used to work at nasa and the situation was the same there.

This is the first thing that came up when I searched "what os does google use".

Google's desktop operating system of choice is Ubuntu Linux. San Diego, CA: Most Linux people know that Google uses Linux on its desktops as well as its servers. Some know that Ubuntu Linux is Google's desktop of choice and that it's called Goobuntu
>>
Pretty much all modern machines in Industry use Ubuntu now, just because its cheaper than Windows.
>>
>>53793880
Airports, banks and other business. Yeah, why wouldn't they? Unix and Unix-link operating systems have excellent security.
>>
First off not every os that isn't windows or os x is linux. Most big companies that are big in tech probably use their own os, not linux.

Yes

However, if you are a /g/tard and have a retarded definition of "desktop" along the lines of

>has new AAA games, photoshop, microsoft office
>usable by grandma
>supports MY brand new gayman graphics card

Then no, they don't, and nobody in the professional world has a 100% desktop anyways.
>>
>>53798888
No, you won't. The way a modern linux runs under the hood can not be understood just by learning the retardation of POSIX sh and its accompanying software tools (aka "CLI"). Fuck, you won't even learn how BSD operates by learning sh. Fuck, init scripts don't even have to be in sh! People have written them in perl and python, and C is a technical possibility! Not that learning sh would teach you how sysv-style init or upstart actually worked in the first place! And how many linux users even know exactly what dbus and udev do? Apparently not many, because the anti-systemd crowd still uses the fuck out of them (udev especially) without complaining about the "UNIX way" or "bloat". They even unironically use vim when it's really just all the code bloat of emacs compiled into a smaller binary with the magic of ifdef hell.

>They even unironically use vim when it's really just all the code bloat of emacs compiled into a smaller binary with the magic of ifdef hell.

Care to detail on that one?
>>
>>53800770
Download vim's source and take a peek around. It's hardly the epitome of the UNIX way or clean, maintainable code. Also take a look at its fairly long list of fairly dumb CVEs, mostly parsing errors in its motherfucking embedded scripting language (vi never had that).

Ask a neovim maintainer about how much unused legacy code they ripped out, ifdefs and all. I believe the source can fit on a floppy again.
