It wont be too much of an upgrade then, especially if you have a dedicated GPU.
The CPU portion of the APU is essentially just a higher clocked 860k. The only thing the APU has over the 860k is obviously the integrated graphics.
Which again, if you have a dedicated GPU for gaming is going to do nothing for you anyway.

Then just replace the thermal paste and buy a decent CPU cooler.
The 7870k is literally just an 860k but clocked ~300mhz higher and has integrated graphics.
I got that cpu OP a year ago, pretty good value for money, believe it or not the only game I have to lower completely the settings to play is rocket League, I have played Crysis 3, battlefield 4, Bioshock, and many more with mid settings at 1080p.

If I remember the 860k has high voltage from stock (around 1.45V ish), must be due to the shitty silicon.
I have a 7850k and am doing 4.5ghz at 1.42 volts for comparison.

Why not just get whatever CPU you think fits in your budget and get a 950 or 370. I'm pretty sure they would that would out perform an APUs capabilities and only cost you a couple bones more.

I got an i5 workstation for 300, the HDD died, and I had to replace memory and power supply.
The case sucks since I cant OC because of heat reasons, and I have a GTX 970.

A10 is good for low budget gaming machine, many games can run on medium high setting at 720.
DONT buy a fucking celeron or anything with only 2 cores.

Im using the same APU op, works good.
Invest in an aftermarket cooler, u can OC the cpu side to 4.3 without even changing the voltage and you can OC the igpu to 1114 asawell. Make sure you have 2133 ram too.... i can play most games around 1080-900p, 30fps locked with med effects.

Or you can disable Turbo Core and C6 state and don't have this problem.
Does anyone in this thread use his A10 in a VGA passthrough build? As in using the iGPU for a Linux host and whatever GPU for a Windows guest?
I'm tempted to do such a build myself because the iGPU is sufficient to feed my addiction to 2D indie games and to complete my game backlog that stretches to 2005.

A8-7600 is the best bang for the buck APU, anything after that is not really worth it since the iGPU will end up bandwidth starved to death
The 7650K is really nice if you're into OC'ing
If you can get a R7 260 or better, and a 860K or better, you would end up with much better bang for the buck
