I currently switched to Linux and work in it full-time.
I still keep a dual-boot of Windows 8 on my computer with an old system just in case I really need to run some weird program right now, or something major really breaks, and I really need to run some normal program right now.
Should I assume that updating it to 8.1 will break some of the programs installed on it prior, or is it safe? Is there any sense in doing so even though I don't use it anymore?
Use a local account. Uninstall every metro app you can. Disable OneDrive. Make sure to go through all the Control Panel (both of them) categories and scour every sub sub sub menu for data mining settings and disable them. Even if you disabled all the ones it presented during install it still leaves many more enabled. Then you open up the Services and disable all the services related to telemetry. After that you open up Group Policy and disable Windows Defender. Finally you open up Windows Firewall, reset it to the default settings and turn on the outbound filtering. Nothing should still be making connections except things you explicitly allow. In my case I only allow Windows Time and Windows Update.
Unfortunately since Windows 8.1 (yes 8.1 not 8) only allowing the Windows Update service through the firewall doesn't work. You have to allow the entirety of svchost.exe which is an obvious problem. So I simply disable the outbound firewall for a short time once a month or whenever I want to update. At least it keeps W10 from nagging me to restart for updates.
Alternatively you can just install W7 or a Linux distro and don't fight your own OS. You will have to micromanage your updates every time if you go the W7 route though.
