Sweet, I have to do this more often with my PC! Maybe, just maybe, I'll save some energy considering these wall vampires. The video is TL;Didn't see, but let me guess, he installs a mainframe, and he's making a presentation of the boring process he went through, he's a real innovator that one.
>>
>>53748880
let me know when he does something with it
you know it's gonna be some gay shit
>>
>>53749768
tl;dw version
>kid likes old computers
>starts collecting a fuckton of old computers
>parents are pissed
>one day he sees an auction for an old mainframe
>bids on it before he even realizes what he got himself into
>even his friends tell him its a bad idea
>wins auction
>goes to the place
>realizes he can't move it because it weighs a ton
>has to break it up into parts and get his friends to help him move it
>makes two trips one for the parts and the other for the actual chassis
>when he gets the chassis to his parents house he realizes he can't fit it in the basement
>his dad has to dig up part of the basement wall to make it fit
>reassembles the mainframe in the basement
>realizes the thing isn't really compatible with his electricity
>one friend tells him how to plug it into single phase(not optimal, still can't reliably run at 100%)
>gets the thing powered on
>realizes it needs all kinds of hardware which he didn't have
Eventually he installs CentOS and later SUSE on it. Then he SSHs into SUSE and uses lynx to browse like two websites.
>>
>>53749923
Pretty fucking stupid kid, eh?

He should be ashamed, not proud of this. What's wrong with him? "I'm too stupid to figure out what a mainframe is, better make a presentation of how stupid I am for internet fame"
>>
>>53750015
What? He's just an aspiring electrical engineer that collects old shit and decided to get and set up a mainframe.
There isn't much you can do with it because it's a pile of junk in today's standards, but the fact that he was able to get it running for a relatively low price ($350~), considering that the mainframe was 1000x more expensive 10 years ago.
>>
>>53750015
He did apparently get it working after buying a bunch of parts for it but he was still missing things apparently and considering the power situation I doubt he's using this thing for anything. It's a lot of work for a hobby.

Just think, all the time you have spent cutting this guy down could have been spent learning something new. Oh well.
>>
>>53750504
I'm against that too, but at least /g/ is a relatively secluded forum. I remember reading long ago about a guy who built an entire CPU from basic logic circuits. He spent something like a year soldering everything together, even made a nice faceplate with lights and switches for the registers akin to an old 8800. He didn't go around and give talks saying look at how cool I am (as far as I know). He just put it up on a personal website. He also hosted a single web page on a tiny HTTP server running on Minix on his homebrew CPU.
So, I'm not railing on the faggot in the OP as much as on the whole online culture of "Check out this.." and "Here's what..." and "You'll never believe..." that allows some snot-nosed faggot to give a 45-minute talk to what I assume is at least a somewhat sizeable audience about a pet project that doesn't affect anyone but makes people who have marginal interest in tech think that what he's doing is a YUGE FUCKING DEAL.

Mother Fucker just because you don't like it doesn't make him dumb. Some of the best hobbies are ones that yield almost nothing of impressive value.
If it does, you're chained to it instead of coming back on your own will. It becomes a monotonous source of income that you will never find the same joy in when you first started.

I enjoy writing but fucking shoot me if I ever get a profession forcing me to churn out pieces weekly or even annually.

The kid is over its head and has dumped a lot into this project with no real goal other than personal growth. No one is saying hes brilliant but his desire to learn is pretty fucking commendable. I don't know why you need to drive that stick up your ass any further then it already is.

You're the only jackasses making him out to be a "special snowflake". This is what happens at a convention, people share their experiences with their hobby. You shitposters have some sort of gut reaction when you see a kid talking about tech.
Go back to Linux Tech Tips or battlestation threads and argue about something there. Better yet, get yourself a hobby and go to a convention.

I'm guessing you've only seen the defcon videos posted online. There are plenty of talks with ~10 people audiences that are damn similar.
The last DefCon I went to was in '09, and there was a presentation by an 11 year old who made a little-tykes cluster computer and used it to crack a WEP address. It wasn't educational, nor did it contain much information, but it was great fun to watch.
There was another talk by an old lady (honestly, she had to have been over 80 years old) show off her bitcoin mining rig and how her grandson convinced her to join the hobby.
Both of those talks were fun, and they're just about the most mainstream thing you could find at a tech convention, aside from watching somebody "build" a computer.
Compared to those talks, this guy had an interesting presentation. I guarantee every other talk at this convention was similar, but because this one was from a kid using old tech, shitposters are posting en masse about how he isn't a genius or how boring this presentation was. Nobody's making the assertion that this kid's a genius, and you don't have to watch it! This wasn't posted on emergency-broadcast channels, it didn't interrupt your daily lives, it hasn't gone viral, it's literally just a standard convention-style presentation.

If this talk is getting anybody close to having a heart attack, you should sure as hell stay away from just about any convention. For a convention talk, this was pretty damn good. Most are difficult to sit through without feeling the awkward tenseness in the air, or having the presenter mumble through the first half.

You know that you can't make a post talking about something like that and not at least give us any information past that. What exactly was this computer built out of?
>>
>>53752342

To be honest, I don't remember, but I'm sure it's online somewhere. I know his parents had a hefty hand in it, and it all fit into a pretty small filing cabinet. It was at one of those hotel-talks at The Riviera.
His talk was almost entirely about how much fun he'd had and how his parents foot the bill.
Since it was in '09, I'd wager that he just used a bunch of Athlons. The main point was that it wasn't a professional build, just a bunch of inexpensive used parts that he had fun with.

If you really are interested, I'd be down to look around the house for some pictures and we can try figure out what he was running

You realize the "bogo" in bogomips stands for "bogus", right? It's literally a metric of how many millions of times per second a CPU can do nothing, and even regular MIPS are a shit metric for comparisons between architectures.

Like AS/400s, System zs (and mainframes in general) aren't built to be fast for general purpose computation, they're built for ultra-reliable operation on a lot of shit at once with uptimes of 10-20 years.

>>53752993
>fuck hobbies, learning, and exploring new technologies, that lessens your ability to mindlessly consume as cheaply as possible!

>>53754082
> I'd stuff modest desktop guts into it
But shit, that takes out half of what makes the equipment so incredible.
Cray was a fucking genius, and every single aspect of that freaky hardware had a purpose, from the curved frame designed to maximize speed by minimizing the communication distances between components to the "bench" design that held the ingenious cooling system that defined the system even moreso than the computation hardware itself.

Honestly though, if I ever made myself a mini-cray, the T3Es are pretty damn neat looking.
