Welcome to /fg/lt/, or as I've recently taken to calling it, /fg+lt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

If you want to scale photos, you're fine with Pinta or whatever, but if you actually want to draw/paint, maybe Krita would work, however PS is so far ahead of anything I've tried on linux feature-wise it's not even funny.

I've got a thumbnail problem - sometimes thumbnails for png won't generate. How would I go at diagnosing what's going wrong?
I think my distro (Antergos) uses totem-thumbnailer to generate thumbnails, and invoking it on the files from the console works no problem.

He's a different kind of autistic. He only wants to use a distro that prevents non-free software from being used or accessed easily IIRC. Even though this is a main goal of Debian, I believe he doesn't like it due to the fact that you can use official non-free repos to get non-free software post-install.

There is so much wrong with this post.
- Adobe products aren't better, it's the opposite; since there is no source code, it's cripple computing.
- Linux is a kernel, it has no user interface and therefore can't run any of said programs. Please call the whole system GNU/Linux.
- Free software is not an alternative next to propritary software, since it's free software, it's acutally superior.

Experience? Well, you need to learn GIMP the same way like every other program, personally I love the scripting features, so I can edit pictures I usually edit the same way anyway automatically. But there are more amazing things to discover. For new users, I suggest single window mode.

You don't, I do in some circumstances. I do play webms (and pretty much all video content) with mpv, I have a hotkey setup for it in Pale Moon to follow a link in mpv.
I also have Chromium which does have webm support, but your initial claim that (all) browsers simply support webms was incorrect. Since I don't know what browser this guy was using (and I didn't read carefully to know that some webms *did* work), I didn't assume that his browser could just play them.
No need to autism this hard just because I'm legit trying to help the guy, though.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Loonix,
is in fact, GANOO/Loonix, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GANOO
plus Loonix. Loonix is not an operating system unto itself, but rather
another free component of a fully functioning GANOO system made useful by
the GANOO corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising
a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GANOO system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of
GANOO which is widely used today is often called "Loonix", and many of its
users are not aware that it is basically the GANOO system, developed by the
GANOO Project.

There really is a Loonix, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Loonix is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by
itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system.
Loonix is normally used in combination with the GANOO operating system: the
whole system is basically GANOO with Loonix added, or GANOO/Loonix. All the
so-called "Loonix" distributions are really distributions of GANOO/Loonix.

Install ntfs-3g and just mount your windows partition like you would mount any other partition.

Just put an entry in your fstab to mount that partition to /home. Be sure to have all the required directories available for your existing users on the new partition though. You can mount it manually once if you don't want to reboot, if it's in your fstab correctly it will mount it at boot for you.

If you have youtube-dl and mpv, you can open most videos straight in mpv as well. Works like a charm for pretty much everything I've ever encountered, even local newssites that stream their shit in Silverlight.

Can confirm. There are hundrets of supported websites, "youtube"-dl is pretty misleading. If a website is not supported, there's even a fallback mode where it's parsing the site for objects.

y0 /flt/, I'm creating a list.
This is what I've got so far:

- Sublime
- solarized

What else should be on this list?
>>
>>53741286
KDE
>>
>>53741286
Depends on what you want to achieve. I'd personally recommend against using oh-my-zsh. It's a pretty big thing, and you generally only want very small parts. Zsh is pretty easy to customize without depending on something huge like that. If you really want, you can just get the specific scripts you want from their repo and include those manually.
I'd also suggest Lime Text instead of Sublime Text in case you want such an editor.

Numix and Solarized are pretty much your personal taste.

I'm trying to set up my wii remote for games and whatever on Arch Linux, but for some reason none of the signals come through.

I have bluetooth all set up, paired with the remote, and I've installed both xf86-input-xwiimote-git and xwiimote-git. I've tried restarting X and the computer, but nothing happens at all when I push the buttons. It's definitely hooked up (led 1 is on), and if I run xwiishow as root it can pick button presses, but nothing else. I've looked at xev and nothing shows up.

I am suspicious that I actually need to put these config lines from the man page in some file, but I'm not sure. Does anybody have any experience with hooking up their wiimote like this?

Is there a way to make Nautilus show icon view when you're browsing pictures to post instead of list view? I'm on Debian with GNOME if that helps

And yes I've seen that image of the guy back in 2004 or something like that suggesting this change. I have no clue if someone has actually implemented it though, or if I should use a different file manager.

I'm running Debian on my desktop machine. My laptop is running MInt, but I'm sort of interested in checking out Arch or Manjaro as I've never tried any distro that is not Debian-based.

What do you guys think of those? Are there any non-debian based distros you can recommend?

Also what major differences would you find in switching between Debian-based distros to other ones? Just the package manager or does it go deeper?

Avoid Manjaro, it's broken trash.
Arch is good but the install is tough if you aren't familiar with it. If you want to skip the grind, Architect is a pretty good alternative.

Alternatively for something a bit more 'usable', you can check out openSUSE, which is rpm-based. One week with openSUSE and you'll swear that no distro could possibly be complete without the YAST, mark my words.
>>
So I've been running mint for a few months now, and am thinking of using opensuse. For someone who is still a noob at linux, would a rolling release be reccomended? When the leap gets a new version, how will I update?
>>
>>53742623
It should, try this:

https://blog.martin-graesslin.com/blog/2013/12/firefox-kde-integration-in-debian-testing/

It might pull in 200MiB of KDE/Qt shit with it though.
>>
>>53742680
Rolling releases are very nice.
There basically aren't any 'new versions'. You just update through your package manager whenever it's convenient.
I use Arch myself (which is also rolling release), and I usually update once every two or three days. That's basically all you have to do to keep everything up to date.

What tips from experience (aside from what is found in the wiki) can you give me to avoid bricking my computer?

I have a live USB handy just in case it ever gets out of hand, but still, I'd rather it doesn't come to that if possible
>>
>>53742744
Use the apt addon with package warnings, follow the unstable IRCs and package lists to check for breakage before updating and consider aptosid or pinning aptosid repos, or even just keeping an eye on their forums or mailing lists.

I can't be arsed to check what advice if any here was acquired via the wiki and I am not the poster to which you replied.

Literally just have youtube-dl and mpv installed, and just open whatever stream you want to watch with `mpv <url>`. If you have a decent browser you can setup hotkeys to execute a command or add an mpv command to the context menu.

In general, if I'm on twitch, I press `;m` to follow a link in mpv, and then just hit the right characters to open the one I wanted.

Basically the light weight and efficiency. With Arch, you can be 1000% sure that there's not one single package you don't need on your machine hogging system resources. I and many other people don't think that's worth the tradeoff in time required to install, customize, and manage the system.

Also, the package manager, pacman, is very good. But Manjaro has that too

Sorry, I forgot to quote you. You said that derivatives are bad. That's meaningless without substantiation. I wasn't questioning the part of your post about breakage... I don't know about Debian because I only used it for a few months, but I used Arch for years and I never had anything break on me.

How different are the requirement for games in Linux? I don't play games but my job's boss got me thinking of playing league with him and was thinking of trying it on my t420 that runs debian.

Ah, okay.

How about this: Derivatives are pointless.

You're adding things on top that push you further from the original distro and make it harder to learn things and get help. I don't want to be at the mercy of the Ubuntu community, but I got a lot of decent help from the Debian community over the years. If I revealed I was on Ubuntu (heck, they'd find it out soon enough) while asking for help in #debian, they'd surely turn me away.

Ubuntu does a lot of weird shit like forcing restarts after updates, pushing you to use PPAs, etc. It's just that they're breaking the standards they should follow, really.

Installation mostly. There's just no reason most users, even most advanced ones, need to do all this https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/installation_guide every time they set up a new computer. They say it gives you more "choices", but 99% of that stuff is done the same way every time anyway.
