Sup dudes. Quick question: Is it possible to use recording software on a dinosaur laptop? Or will it make the performance drop and make it unplayable/unwatchable?
I want to get into recording little snippets and was wondering if you guys have any info on this.
Bump.

Depends.
What are the specs of the laptop? You trying to record at 1080p 60fps? You asked a question and expect everyone to read your mind.

2 things that matter most, compression rate and the write speed of the drive you are recording to.
If its highly compressed your processor is going to be under a lot of strain. If you want to lessen the load, record it with less compression. These files will be huge though so if your drive has a slow write speed it'll just fuck up
An old computer really can't handle modern codecs.
These codecs won't work well
>h264
>hevc/h265
>vp8
>vp9
These might at a good preset
>mpeg
>mpeg2
>rawvideo (yuv) <- high write speed/filesize

You either can record with yor gpu or cpu.
You need a newer gpu that has hardware support for h264 encoding or an intel cpu that can do the same (intel quick sync). Anything else will be slower but would probabbly be ok for only recording your desktop
