get a Fiio X3 or another dedicated device that reads music off of SD cards and supports all formats.
>inb4 "just use le smartphone XDDD"

>>
Same exact issue I just had. I love physical buttons, but so far the only recommendations I've gotten are the Fiios which are expensive as fuck.

Another sansa clip.

Also how did your clip break?
Mine's been chugging away happily for 6 years now, it would suck if it just suddenly fried.
>>

Fiio is great but too expensive.

Tbh the physical buttons on sansa are a bit ittitating with their click sound

I need physical buttons because I have my playlist memorized and I do a lot of changing songs/volume without the player leaving my pocket. Also, driving.

It didn't break, it just died.

lasted well over 10000 hours of music

I was considering a zune, are they worth?

I've had two. One won't get past the opening loading screen, and the second one that just broke last week won't turn on without me plugging it in, and then I can't turn it off.

it might not be dead!
i have experience sansaclip 'death' several times... it has always come back after doing a reboot by pressing and holding the 'home' + 'power' + middle track button. ten seconds or so while holding these 3 buttons has revived it several times. i have experienced black screen / will not power on; screen lock on 'refreshing data'; also got it wet (once) and after drying off over 2 days, got it to work again!

let us know how it goes!

That's highly subjective, and up to OP to decide. Most people, apart from maybe the elderly, have gotten used to touchscreens for years now. Are you saying you don't own a phone with a touchscreen as well?
>And I don't need anything other than ALAC. If I wanted those new formats, there's always Rockbox.

Not the other dude, but what does a dedicated music device actually do differently than a (smart)phone in terms of playing music, apart from software things like more advanced playlist support or sperg level equalizer options? Like, actual sound quality?

(I'm a dumbphone & sansa clip owner)
>>
>>53703828
your reasoning behind why smartphones are better is "because of new codecs" as if dedicated devices do not support these new codecs. My X3 plays all formats, and I regularly see people on /g/ asking for help because they're having trouble playing .flac or .ogg on their device so that argument is literally not true at all

oh and he's not using a sansa clip anymore he's looking for a replacement.

No, as far as PMPs go touchscreens suck. You need to pull your phone out of your pocket to change songs, can't change songs with gloves on, etc.

No, my phone has a touchscreen, and I also don't use it as a PMP because it would suck for such a task.

You don't need to. Most phones, when you hold the volume buttons up or down, it changes tracks. And gloves with responsive fingertips have been available for a long time now.

any phone made in the last 5 years running android can read the largest commercially available sd cards out.

you're not using it as a phone. it's not going to have any of the phone-related things on. The battery will last far longer than there is any need for it to last.

Clunky interface and controls on pmp are objectively worse than any smart phone ui.

not to mention the added benefit of having access to wifi music streaming apps if you want.

I'm not sure how WiFi or not plays into this. I can play 5.1 192khz FLACs on my phone. Good luck doing that on a PMP. Phones offer far more options than a dedicated PMP.

I just find the clip a bit too small. If you're ever doing something active it's a pain to change song/see what's on the screen.

The thing is not all work places allow you to have a smart phone with you since they have cameras due to sensitive information. I have to have my smartphone locked up at security and I get a key and I collect it at the end of my shift. This also limits my choice of mp3 player but I found a decent solution - the sansa clip jam. I also have to show them my mp3 player to check that it doesn't have a camera and sign a sheet.

>Ruizu x02

I bought one. I then bought three more to give out as gifts and such.

The problems with the interface are vastly overblown, you get used to the left/right for scrolling in five minutes. There's the alternative firmware (AGPTek) if that really bothers you, but I've tried both and actually went back to the Ruizu firmware.

The battery life is fucking ace, I kinda doubt it will really do 80 hrs, but I've gotten at least 20-30 hrs of use out of it which only drained the battery to about 30%. All my other PMPs (sansas, ipods) pretty much have to be charged every night if I want to use them for a full 8-12 hours (work + car + home), whereas I can actually use the ruizu for a full day at work and home and have enough left to go for another full day or two. Only bad thing is the player will not play while charging, but since the life is so great it's not a real problem.

I'm not a professional memeophile so I can't say too much about sound quality. It sounds fine to me. The flac/ogg/etc support is nice, not because I care too much about the formats but so I don't really have to care about what format I download my music in. The sequenced ability of my rockboxed stuff (VGM, SPC, GBS etc) is neat for being able to store music from every NES game ever made etc but realistically the 2% of that I actually listen to fits just fine as 128k MP3 rips on my Ruizu as well.

I do really appreciate the five band eq that can be adjusted on-device, I use it a lot. Not as good as the Rockbox EQ, but still leagues better than your standard no-eq devices or MAYBE presets if you're lucky.

Build quality is great, get it in black. Heavy use for two months so far and no scratchy headphone jack etc. Screen has started to become *slightly* scuffed probably from keys/change and stuff in the pocket, so probably worth cutting a screen protector down to size if you care about it.

So after 12? hrs of >>53703856 going unanswered, I conclude that there's no reason to assume PMPs have any meaningful properties or capabilities that make them better at playing music in terms of actual sound quality and that all reasons to actually get one instead of just using your phone are of secondary nature.

The most important thing is probably battery life, but here's the thing about battery life: You know, if you do have a smartphone, you're plugging it in every day or every other day anyway, *regardless* of whether you play music with it. Getting a seperate music playing device just means that you now have *two* devices you have to charge at regulary intervalls.

You can expect shitloads of bluetooth audio glitching due to marshmallow

How are smartphones superior again? Yes I'm the same guy from earlier.

Its probably the battery is dead. Just put one from old nokia in it.

the point is that you most likely have a music-capable phone anyway, that you need to charge it every so often anyway. The question is whether buttons, better features on a software level and muh rockbox sperg equalizers actually varrant carrying around a dedicated piece of hardware.

Regarding storage, I quite honestly think there aren't more than, let's say, 30GB of good music out there, assuming decent quality ogg/mp3. What kinds of crap do people listen to that they need more than that? Apparently some even have triple digit GB music collections, wtf.

I've been using a cheap-o smartphone with a 1500 mAh battery rooted with xposed/PBMC as a music player for awhile now. Works fine DESU. Just disable all the usual Google shit, put it on airplane mode and it'll run fine and the battery won't drain like a bitch.

I do, and it needs to be charged 7-10+ times more often than my PMP
>The question is whether buttons, better features on a software level
Worth it

I have a few hundred gigs of lossless music. I find it rather retarded to have a second copy of music handy just for putting it on my PMP, so I just put the lossless music on my PMP. In the end, I still have the space to use it as a portable SSD
