Shouldn't be any in theory... In practice it can happen if you're unlucky, but it's usually just stuff like plymouth theme or programs crashing because of clashing settings. If it happens you can clear out the hidden preference folders in your home directory and it should be fine.

No, MATE is okay and there's always been a few users of it. The majority of /g/ uses a tiling wm, and xfce might be the most popular DE here.
