>expecting Linux distros to ever be good.

If Google made a true desktop OS based on a fusion of Android and Chrome OS to go head to head against Apple and Microsoft, would /g/ use it?

One thing is for sure, it would be better than Ubuntu, Debian, Arch, Gentoo, etc, right?
>>
>>53691974
Ubuntu 16.04 is pretty fucking good.
>>
>>53691989
No it's not
>>
Sure it'll be good - all apps you can install would be top rated software from play market, no scum from git and other opensource shit
>>
>>53691989
>Ubuntu 16.04 is pretty fucking good.

That's what you people keep saying about every version but it's still a bloated pile of shit.
>>
>>53692001
Yes it is.
>>
>>53692016
Yea but that's all X's fault. 16 should help fix that
>>
>>53692130
How will it fix that?

Neck you're self

>>

Compared to what? Windows? Windows is even more bloated.
>>
The fact that Google uses Ubuntu (a custom version known as Goobuntu internally) and OSX basically makes the OP's entire argument completely moot.

Now get the fuck out.
>>
Goobuntu sounds like ubuntu for goobers.
>>
>>53692383
Their own OS isn't done yet.
>>
>>53691974

>would I use it?

Well, maybe, if it is open-source and free as in freedom (and as in free beer :P )
>>
>>53692442
Of course
>>
>>53692442
>>53692676

I would fork it and remove all Google's "telemetry".

>Thanks Google for doing the work for us, now let us GNUsers do what we will with it.
>>
>>53692813
Well duh, of course it would get Cyanogen'd
>>
>>53692839

Sounds like a good distro then :)
>>
>>53692145
not this anon but ubuntu 16 maybe is using mir server, not x.
>>
The problem with linux is it cant use most popular software.

Where is the vst support? The ableton, fl, etc support.

And the other reason is the fact that theres no real incentive to switch

you're retarded :^)

No.
>>
>>53691974
Well, all I want from an OS is to be as unnoticeable as possible, have touch gestures like OSX and support for Office software. The first two sounds doable, if Google manages the latter and doesn't fuck up the rest, I might give them a try ... given premium hardware.

>One thing is for sure, it would be better than Ubuntu, Debian, Arch, Gentoo, etc, right?
From usability, most likely. Privacy might be a nightmare though.

>>53691989
Did they fix Software center? Deleting and installing new software takes fucking ages.

I might...but it's gonna be open, right?

If it had drivers for anything, like Windows, I'd switch in a heartbeat.
>>
>>53692966

Freetards don't do anything on their computer besides ricing their desktops.
If you say something about music production or CAD they'll unironically tell you to install some shitty free alternative or to use Wine.
>>
I tried Fedora 23, Ubuntu 15.04 (and the 16.04 beta) last week and still the most basic things are not reliable.

Fans run louder either using more resources or just kicking them in sooner for no reason and sleep/hibernate lid close which I do a lot only works on linux for me about 40% of the times I tried compared to 100% on Windows.

Honestly I try Linux many times but for me it will always be just a hobby or "fun" stuck in a VM until it can compete with windows in software and hardware working.
>>
>>53693108
What do you do for a living or what are you studying? Linux isn't for everyone and if you need Windows for your work/projects that's ok.
>>
>>53693157
Architectural technologist (construction).
I have nothing against Windows it works great for me and I haven't had any serious issues in probably 10 years, works great for me. GNU/Linux is more fun to mess around with in free time but basic shit being so broken even after years just annoys me.

Also audio sounds like crap with messed up volumes. I cant be bothered looking now but there is a kernel bug report years old about alsa drivers being generic so not always detecting hw correctly for volume levels to be right; so 12% volume in Windows is 40% in linux for me and it sounds a little like through tin-can which is most annoying.

I'm civil engi tech myself and without AutoCAD, RebarCAD Linux can't be my workstation yet. I hope they would change it soon.

Chrome Os = Gentoo you cucks

What's wrong with top Linux distros in 2016?

They havent changed from 2002
>>
>>53693711
What problems are there?
>>
>>53693739
Linux is still slow to respond when using a desktop UI, graphically inferior to WIndows and Mac, shitty at even the most basic things like the audio stack, and absolutely a mess when it comes to software choices and management of dependencies.
>>
>>53693790
>Linux is still slow to respond when using a desktop UI

Not true in the slightest. Didn't read the rest because it's most likely as dumb.
>>
>>53691974
They actually are, anon. Surprised you didn't know this.
They're planning on discontinuing ChromeOS by the end of this year and replacing it with a 'desktop'-oriented version of Android.
>>
>>53694120
I hope it's a linux distro without all their spying bullshit.
>>
>>53694134
It's just Android with a different frontend.
>>

Yeah... Google lives thrives off of mountains of data.
