Ubuntu MATE ships with it (just not as the default layout).

I tried Ubuntu 16.04 beta 1.

Without doing anything at all, suddenly the sidebar and the bar at the top disappeared. I had to open a terminal and reboot, and it didn't fix it.

But frankly it was a better experience than PC-BSD: I installed that with Gnome through a net-install. Once I got into my account, Gnome crashed instantly and I couldn't restart my session by pressing ctr+alt+backspace
>>
>>53676670
Do you think it'd be too difficult to modify that layout?

One thing I wanted was just the global menu. Getting rid of the sidebar, or using a bottom bar or dock would be optimal.
>>
>>53676684
probably cause gnome is shit on BSD except OpenBSD. Should've tried Lumina, PC-BSD's own DE. Or KDE at the least.

gnome shell has systemd dep, so it is shit on most non-systemd platforms.

>With convergence in mind, we also revisit our choice of technology. While the desktop version of Unity has been built on top of Nux, an attempt at an OpenGL-only toolkit, all of the other incarnations of the Unity shell have been developed on top of Qt/QML. In the past, we have chosen Nux over Qt/QML (version 4.x) to address our requirements for the ability to provide sophisticated UX and effects by leveraging pure OpenGL whenever necessary. However, with Qt5/QML2, we no longer see the need for a custom OpenGL-toolkit, as Qt5/QML2 allows us to easily access raw OpenGL features and performance. More to this, our experience with Qt5/QML2 during the Ubuntu Touch development was very positive, and we feel confident that it allows us to deliver a sophisticated UX across all form factors. Unity Next was developed largely using Qt Modeling Language (QML) on Digia's Qt framework.

>With this particular shift in focus to Qt, it provides an opportunity to also revisit our approach to window management and composition. On our Ubuntu Touch Developer Preview we have initially relied on some modifications to the Android facilities. However a solution is needed to fulfill our Unity Next "look and feel" requirements across all devices, phone to desktop to TV. The solution decided upon is a related Ubuntu project known as Mir.

The out-of-the-box Ubuntu experience has been pretty miserable with recent releases on muh Macs. How can they not optimize it for some of the best selling common systems?

Mint installed perfectly on my MacBook Air aside from having to install the proper wireless driver, which took all of two minutes to download and install.
>>
>>53691598
Having to install wireless drivers after the fact is a pretty big deal for systems with no ethernet (only wifi). Trackpad drivers are also a mess out of the box.
>>
>>53691618
...just booted up 16.04 on my Macbook Retina. Wifi works out of the box once the proprietary driver is selected. Everything is way too small to start, but scaling seems to work well once that's set (still bugs: see the scrollbar in the quick comment box). Only obvious big problem is there's ZERO thumb rejection on the trackpad; makes it practically unusable.

Calm your autism mate. Merely asking if this one is using a stable version of the new KDE overhaul they have been working on for so long.

suuuure anon. it's "stable"

Absolutely this
They even have synapse and Compton built into the tweak tool. How can anyone even compete with that?
>>
>>53697554
Thanks man. Installing Kubuntu when the beta is over.
>>
>>53676588
I'll wait for the final release. Big Ubuntu fan, though. Is it still gonna be hell to upgrade from an existing install?

Your icons are kind of big and inconsistent, and I would change that gradient for something more subtle. Just my opinion, though.

what does the hud/alt menu search look like?

Is possible to remove it since plasma 5.3, faggot. Right click on desktop and settings, uncheck box. SO FUCKING HARD.

This. Ubuntu MATE best *buntu. Debian netinst is still superior for a more controlled installation, but if you don't have time or don't need it, Ubuntu MATE is fucking great.

That's just what cinnamon does i guess, I don't have any control over icon sizes .

Yes, why settle for less? It's actively developed and supported, has top tier modularity, top tier performance, and the features and Polish of unity or gnome. Mate-tweak even allows got Wm switching on the fucking fly
>>
It's pretty good I think
>>

What does it look like when a program doesn't support a minimalistic icon style?
>>
>>53703477
do you know how program icons work in linux?

THEY STILL DIDNT ADD MIR AND UNITY 8

WHAT THE FUCK ARE THEY WAITING FOR

THERES ABSOLUTELY NOTHING NEW IN THIS PIECE OF SHIT
>>
>>53703539
no not exactly, only that it's a pain to add them
>>
>>53703593

there will be a separate version with Unity 8, they didn't want to do the same mistake like they did with the introduction of Unity since the upcoming version is an LTS
>>
>>53703691
they're separate, which makes them much easier to make substitutes than in windows, where program icons are embedded in the programs' executable
>>
>>53703763
-- also, icon themes will override the icon the program came with, so if your theme has a "apps/$appname.ext" icon, the system will use that instead

What theme?
>>

Then you should be using plasma, not fucking gnome3 or unity

D-does it get better? I'm currently moving 5tb of data and the sequential writes are fucking awful.

Damn why don't these idiots just use integrate docky or plank in their Unity-DE instead of this garbage launcher?

It's really excellent again.

MATE > all buntus
>>
>>53709966

MATE is a desktop environment, not an operating system.

>stupid fucking people will be the death of us all
>>
>>53705655
>he fell for the ZFS meme
On a more serious note, don't be surprised if performance is not on top. The whole ZFS on linux sounds like a huge hack, plus ZFS is using blocks (like the dog slow ext3) rather than extents which make it inherently slower.

Using Linux, you'd be better off with ext4 + mdraid/lvm if you value your data, or btrfs if you want cutting edge features.
Or try try freenas if you'd like a native ZFS implementation.

MATE != Ubuntu MATE

Again, a desktop environment vs an operating system.

The correct terminology should have been:

>Ubuntu MATE > Ubuntu
>>
>>53711080
And that would be far better.
What's your point?
>>
>>53711080
And that would be better. You're not making a very good case.

Confirmed never even tried Unity.

The top bar combines with the fullscreen window top bar, to close it you can click the top left pixel on the screen.

I’d just like to interject for moment. What you’re refering to as MATE, is in fact, Ubuntu-MATE, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, Ubuntu plus MATE. MATE is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning Ubuntu system made useful by the Ubuntu corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by Canonical.

Many computer users run a modified version of the Ubuntu system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of Ubuntu which is widely used today is often called MATE, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the Ubuntu system, developed by the Ubuntu Project.

There really is a MATE, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. MATE is the DE: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The DE is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. MATE is normally used in combination with the Ubuntu operating system: the whole system is basically Ubuntu with MATE added, or Ubuntu-MATE. All the so-called MATE distributions are really distributions of Ubuntu-MATE!
