4chan is a closed source, for profit website that tracks you and your data and the FBI have direct access to all of the backend data.
>>
>>53678495
>closed source
It mostly doesn't matter to a website's users if the software running on it is free or not for them. You can't modify the software running on the machines anyway, and you can't verify that it's running what it says it's running, so it pretty much doesn't matter either way.
>for profit
There is literally nothing wrong with profit.
>that tracks you and the FBI have direct access
Be careful with what you say then, like you always should in a public area.
>>
>>53678495
>website that tracks you and your data
I don't think it's true. In pretty sure they only hold as much data as they need (only IP so they can ban/clean up spam)
There is no point in tracing down users in any different way. There is also no point in holding data that has been deleted, it would be just waste of space and hiro surely don't want to hold child porn in their archives.

Maybe in your hotel room but he's sitting out amidst ruins on a beautiful day with literally hundreds of square kilometers of land to explore, yet here he is sitting in one damn spot playing on his computer (which he has done so for God knows how long in his life already). Instead of enjoying the once in a lifetime adventure he's on he's fucking doing the same thing he does every day.

No, real men use commercial software. Real men are treacherous but respectable guys, who aren't afraid of getting their hands dirty to make some money.

Only virgins and autists get so ass-burned about purity and shit like that. You gotta get dirty to pop the cherry.

>commercial
I'd just like to interject for a moment. Please don't use "commercial" as a synonym for "nonfree." That confuses two entirely different issues.

A program is commercial if it is developed as a business activity. A commercial program can be free or nonfree, depending on its manner of distribution. Likewise, a program developed by a school or an individual can be free or nonfree, depending on its manner of distribution. The two questions—what sort of entity developed the program and what freedom its users have—are independent.

In the first decade of the free software movement, free software packages were almost always noncommercial; the components of the GNU/Linux operating system were developed by individuals or by nonprofit organizations such as the FSF and universities. Later, in the 1990s, free commercial software started to appear.

Free commercial software is a contribution to our community, so we should encourage it. But people who think that "commercial" means "nonfree" will tend to think that the "free commercial" combination is self-contradictory, and dismiss the possibility. Let's be careful not to use the word "commercial" in that way.

I think I was pretty clear about what I meant. I meant software you pay money for and which you use to make money with.

That's usually the kind of software that gets things done in real life. You know like Photoshop or CAD programs. These two alone power a lot of professions in the world, making it possible for them to get a lot more work done faster and better, in exchange for buying the license to use them. And everyone is benefitting from this, it's a great simbiotic relationship. The company making the software makes money off of it, so it can invest in a quality product, hiring large teams of world class programmers and the companies buying the license make a lot of money by using quality software which allows them to execute their projects in the best possible conditions.

Everyone benefits. If it were that companies would have to use the free versions of these programs, they couldn't work at the same standards of quality and couldn't be as productive as they are now. So, your proposition is very unrealistic for the business world.
>>
I watched some videos of RMS recently
He certainly seems very strongly set in his views and it could be off-putting to some, but he's not that autistic; I've seen far more autistic people in the computing field alone, let alone the world
>>
>>53680356
>software you pay money for and which you use to make money with
Both of which can be done with free software. In fact, Red Hat just crossed the $2 billion milestone, so obviously people are paying them and reaping that symbiotic relationship without sacrificing their freedoms
>>
>>53680443
Buying a program doesn't make you sacrifice anything more than buying a car. They're just tools you use for a particular task.
>>
>>53680530
>car analogy
>>
>>53680552
>memetext analogy
>>
>>53680552
Yeah, you can you cars to transport goods or even to build other stuff, like in construction. So cars can be used as tools, just as software can be a tool. And when you buy a construction vehicle, you usually depend on the manufacturer to offer you support, spare parts, etc. I suppose that makes it "non-free", right? You should be able to fix it yourself with free tools, like wires and screws, right?
>>
>>53680617
*You can use cars
>>
>>53680617
If we're going for this, you can take a car to any shop and have it repaired, tweaked, etc. and you can make that choice based off of any number of factors, including price, reviews, etc. This is known as "competition," and it inspires companies to do better on some level than others offering the same service.

With nonfree software, you can't shop around. You can only get support from the original manufacturer, and if they don't feel like fixing the software you paid for, what are you going to do? You have two options at that point: buy/find new software and convert all your existing workstations to use that new software, or deal with the broken program because it's less costly than switching to something else. Since the cost of switching software is so high, most opt to just deal with problems instead of fixing them.

With free software, their developers know that if their customers aren't satisfied with their support, they can go somewhere else with the huge cost of converting their machines to a new software.
