Why are AMD cards so shit on Linux? I have a water cooled 290X that I use to run at 1200/1400 on Windows 7 and now I can't even fucking play counter strike without stuttering and performance issues.

I tried using fglrx and radeonsi, they're both shit but the latter is the only bearable desktop experience. Do NVIDIA users get this shit too? I'm waiting for the Pascal chips to drop, perhaps they'll give me a functional computer.

AMD is shit on linux.
Which is disappointing considering they're several orders of magnitude more receptive to open source than Nvidia.
Dual boot or passthrough to get decent performance.
>>
>>53658555
Better drivers common soon, remember AMD is contributing to the open source drivers now
>>
Shit drivers. Also, AMD does not work at all in FreeBSD. Nvidia is the way to go in these cases.
>>
when I had a gtx570 I had a persistent problem where I'd only get vsync on one monitor (which everyone claimed was an x/xorg issue), had trouble playing borderlands 2 when it came out on linux at lowest settings 720p (as in, barely 30fps) on a card that could play the game nearly maxed out at 1080p on windows

when I got an r9 285, I had vsync on both monitors with amd catalyst but I was stuck using amd catalyst as the open source driver didn't support it (and only recently with amdgpu have I been able to ditch it) - can't speak for performance though, I just passed it through or used windows (briefly trying cs:go though I did notice stuttering)
>>
My 960 suffers from slower performance in Linux. Stuttering isn't that bad but it does happen. I know it's "just a 960", but I'll easily get 10-20 fps more in Windows even with better graphics settings.

I'm pretty sure it's the actual game. Most of the time AAA games on Linux get ported by some third party who barely knows what they're doing. Not only that, but much of the time they have to port the game from DX to OpenGL.

This is why a lot of people, especially Linux gamers, are trying to push for Vulcan.
>>
I even have performance issues with some desktop environments, and my gpu is a 280x. It's really really sad.

bad ports are one thing but driver performance is significantly worse across the board on linux

I run Linux in a VM so I don't give a damn. No way I'm going use that sorry excuse of a desktop OS as a desktop OS.
>>
>>53658555
What version of Mesa RadeonSI? Its performance and feature support have improved immensely with each new version recently. It went from being barely usable back in 9.x, to acceptable in 10.x, to now starting to outperform legacy fglrx in the latest 11.3.

This is unfortunately still a issue because some popular distros still ship badly outdated versions of the open source drivers.
>>
>>53658555
>perhaps they'll give me a functional computer.
Or you could just use the operating system that supports your hardware instead of wasting your time with one that will never give you what you want.
>>
>>53658555
If I'm not much of a gaymer on Linux, will I have issues with AMD cards? 380x is in the mail, and I'm on Debian if it matters. Only thing I play is cities, and civ. I just want a decent desktop experience with utube and movies and such.
>>
>>53658555
Have you tried the AMDGPU drivers? Consider switching to arch or gentoo to get the latest drivers.
>>
>>53658863
If I were you I would wait until AMDGPU is more of a thing.
>>
>>53658863
I've used the catalyst drivers on a laptop A 10 and it worked just fine for internet stuff and most emulators.
Didn't work with wine at all though. So pretty much most things opengl will work fine.
I really hope amdgpu turns things around. I'd love to have a full amd system running linux and finally be free from the botnet

cant run lol so linux sucks for graphics

Supposedly it runs great with Gallium Nine, and there was a linux binary shown in a leak a while back.

You guys are just going about it the wrong way freetard tinfoils.

Anyone know if it is possible to use my intel igpu on linux, and AMD on win7? Do I just not install drivers for the card, and it works fine?
>>
>>53658863
You'll want to make sure you're running version 4.5 of the kernel since that's where the reclocking stuff for VI was merged. Beyond that you'll want the latest Mesa, I think that's still 11.2 but 11.3 should be really close to release.
>>
>>53658917
What laptop and A-10 model? Is it Kaveri, Carrizo? Did you try Playstation 2 emulation or Dolphin? I'm really interested in AMD's APUs but there are very few benchmarks of them under Linux.
>>
>>53660049
Anything past N64 runs like shit. Amd is useless for dolphin and pcsx2
I don't know what model but it was a 2014 idea pad i think.
Probably kaveri

>>53658555
All hardware is shit on Linux even a printer.

It SHOULD pretty much work like that, yes. Don't install any Radeon / amdgpu / fglrx or whatever drivers and for extra measure you should blacklist those drivers in Xorg so that the system doesn't attempt to load them. For extra measure, you could use the driver installation tools that some distributions include such as Ubuntu or Manjaro's hardware detection (pic related).

An A10-7850K is better at playing Wii games than the Wii itself.

Wow. I can get my Sapphire 290 tri-x up to 1150/1500 with the air cooler that came on it. It runs at a modest house fire of 80C under load :)

It's normal for a 4C/8T system clocked at 3.5 GHz with 3.9 GHz turbo to beat an 8C/16T system at 3.0Ghz with 3.5GHz turbo at overwhelmingly single-core tasks such as console emulation given that the two systems share the same processor family by the same manufacturer.
>>
>>53661118
I could run the memory at 1600 if wanted to, but then there are issues, 1500 is fine, but there isn't much benefit over 1400. It's not the cooling holding me back, it's the card itself, 1.2GHz is a nice number anyways.
