what went wrong?

Used to have a vacuum tube TV. That thing got hotter than hell

transistors went right.

>In the 1940s the invention of semiconductor devices made it possible to produce solid-state devices, which are smaller, more efficient, more reliable, more durable, and cheaper than tubes. Hence, from the mid-1950s solid-state devices such as transistors gradually replaced tubes. The cathode-ray tube (CRT) remained the basis for televisions and video monitors until superseded in the 21st century. However, there are still a few applications for which tubes are preferred to semiconductors; for example, the magnetron used in microwave ovens, and certain high frequency amplifiers.
they got phased out. What the fuck do you mean "what went wrong?" Stop speaking in memes and start acting like you're over 18 you fucking nerd
>>53654041
How do you into ultra-high-power microwave circuits anon?
My microwave oven uses a magnetron transistor.
Audiofools pay top mulah for tube amplifiers
>>53653419
They're gigantic, expensive, outdated pieces of garbage.
>>53653419
Aliens crashed in Roswell.
>>53653419
Nothing. They are still used for guitar amplifiers and they sound godly compared to SS. Maybe one day modelling will catch up, but for now and the foreseeable future, it's tubes all the way.
>>53654052
this guy gets it.
>>53653419
They burned out all the time. You used to go to the drug store or Radio Shack and they had a tube tester to see if your tube was bad. If it was you bought a new one took it home and plugged it in. Used to glow a cool orange, tho
>>53654282
>Store owners rig machine to burn out tubes
Oy vey
>>53654282
Cool story grandpa.
>>53654149
>Maybe one day modelling will catch up
Modeling has caught up and surpassed tubes.
But:
A) People want to believe in evidence, they want to believe in magic glow tubes
B) The market for solid state anything is lowest bidder, while the market for tube amps is 100% premium. So you throw enough money at something inherently inferior and it's still really fucking good, but you throw as little money as possible in something that could be way better and guess what? It's still mediocre.
It's the same thing with ultra expensive laser vinyl players. They can produce a good signal because people throw ridiculous amounts of money into it, but the medium still sucks.

*People DON"T want to believe in evidence.

don't get me started on my computer

Steve Jobs declared the end of vacuum tubes and led the popular conversion to transistors. Samsung naturally had to copy Apple the next year, and the rest of the industry followed suit.
>>53654149
There are have been SS preamps that completely emulate the tube 'sound' for many years now

This is an incredibly lazily done image.
>>53654769
That exposed CRT looks dangerous to me.
>>53657200
Your image is wrong. Robots aren't smarter than people, but they hold much more information
than humans. Does it make them smarter? No.
The rest is tottaly true, though.
>>53653419
literally nothing
marshall class 5 amplifiers are hand wired in the UK and use tubes
fender twin reverb
ect
/g/ will never understand the subtle art of tube circuit design

I hate audiophiles with a passion, BUT, there is no denying solid state amps always sound compressed when compared to vacuum tube amps.
>>53654149
>>53660146
The audiophoolery is real.
Vacuum tube amps produce way more distorted sound. Audiophiles just confuse distortion they like for good sound.
This
>>53660276
Vacuum tubes may be technically inferior, but you have to admit they're cool. I would collect vacuum tubes, but not transistors.
>>53653419
They're hot, waste shitloads of electricity and break constantly
>>53660276
>Vacuum tube amps produce way more distorted sound.
You've only proven my point. The rest is a matter of preference.
>>53654330
Try new tube in machine to see if it works or gets burnt

I didn't say amplifiers, I said preamplifiers. There are SS designs that distort the sound exactly like a tube does. If you wanna be authentic, placing a tube in the preamp will have the same effect without having to deal with an inefficient tube amplifier stage.
Also there is no way that SS amps are more 'compressed' than tubes. Tubes crush the peaks with the harmonics they add. Crude diagram, but it gets the point across.
Tubes have a place, but not in audio any more. The sound can stay because people still like it, but tubes aren't required for the reproduction.
>>53653419
Nothing, they're still used where they have a benefit, they're not used anymore where they don't.
