the ISO itself wasn't compromised. More so the attackers would point you to download their infected ISO rather than the proper one.
As far as I know, Mint 17.3 cinnamon is good to go. But from personal experience Anon, try out Ubuntu MATE 15.10. Mint is based on an old Linux kernel, and has security updates turned off by default to preserve stability. What's the point of a stable system if it has potential security holes?
