Are there any online resources that could tell me if a motherboard or CPU supported VT-D?
Intel ARK is only verifying support for VT-X and motherboard manual just says it supports "virtualization".
Wanna buy a used S5000PSL on eBay and throw in some L540s I have laying around and install ESXi or unRAID to consolidate a few servers I have running at home.
Pic related, motherboard I want to use.

google.com
for example...
>intel 2620
first link
http://ark.intel.com/products/64594/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E5-2620-15M-Cache-2_00-GHz-7_20-GTs-Intel-QPI
says right there if it supports..
>>53632232
>Intel ARK is only verifying support for VT-X
No word on VT-D support, that's why I'm asking here
>>53632293
Which cpu did you check? It can be that search by features will show you does it support vt-d or not. Anyway, mention your cpu, please.
>>53632068
The S5000PSL is outdated as shit. It was made before VT-d was even a thing.

in my link
if yours doesn't have it, I'd say no.

They're L5420s
Found some forums where people say that VT-D is not supported on the 54XX series of CPUs and other posts that say it is.
Why can't OEMs ever provide decent documentation?
>>53632332
There go my dreams of consolidating everything heating up my room
OP here
In that case, anyone have a suggestion for a cheap CPU/mobo combo that'll support VT-D? Need at least 8 cores total.

nope, not supported.
>>53632068
Maybe try HWiNFO64
This is my 3570k as an example.
>>53633114
Oops, just realized you don't have it yet.
If ARK doesn't list VT-d for a product then odds are it isn't supported, or is supported really really badly.
Despite VT-d being a thing, support for it amongst compatible hardware isn't equal. You will find the very first VT-d compliant hardware misses out on features that the newer stuff has, but just by looking at ARK you wouldn't be able to tell.

So, I'd just have to find a mobo that supports VT-D?
I'll have to look around on eBay, then
Too bad that the S5000PSL doesn't seem to support it. Other that that it seems like the perfect motherboard.
>>53633268
It depends on the chipset and BIOS for older boards
Even my really old S775 board with Q35 chipset has a VT-d option in the BIOS
>>53632068
Why can't just buy cheep opteron?
>>53634394
Because I already have the RAM and CPUs, I only need a mobo.
How cheap would an 8 core opteron + mobo with IOMMU support cost?
>>53634941
>8 only
Value probable very variably compared what you want: used one 8 8-30$ complete set about 30-90$
http://www.amazon.com/AMD-OPTERON-PROCESSOR-2-40GHZ-OS6136WKT8EGO/dp/B00C0NHCME/
New 12 core from 100-150$ complete set about 200-300$
http://www.amazon.com/598729-001-AMD-Opteron-cores-processor/dp/B008H64GFO/
new 16 core and last one 200-280$ complete set about 350-480$
Amazon currently have few coupons on opteron motherboard I don't remember which one but price about 100$(with ~40$ diction).
Look at https://pcpartpicker.com/ you could probably find a one.
>>53635218
Holy shit, that's nice
I might end up going down the Opteron route if they support everything I want. Thanks!

>bullfail
top lel
>>53635313
keep in mind the cheap opterons are the bulldozer based chips, you can't overclock them and they running at ~2ghz so it's not going to have any decent performance.
>>53636223
So, implying I don't want to shill out over ~$100 on this, I'm pretty much fucked?
>>53632068
Could just go for an 8320e build man
>>53636315
Not a bad idea. Combos are like $150 on eBay and RAMs like $30 for 8GB. Could be a viable option once my income picks up

Already have PSU and GPU so that would bring it down to $200. Not too shabby. Seems like I'd do everything I'd want it to do
Too bad that 771 doesn't support VT-D. I'd just need a mobo and I'd be done

Link me to a dual socket 771 motherboard on eBay, then
I couldn't find any
>>53632480
vt-d wasn't available until socket 1366.
>>53632480
Have these cpus, no they dont vt-d. Go higher or get more modern cpus
>>53638138
Then explain how my S775 main baord supports it
>>53638438
It doesn't, try to dedicate a GPU.
vt-d is relatively new, I wouldn't buy older shit in hopes to getting it work (neither too new shit due to bugs).
I have for example z400 workstation fom '09 which doesn't support vt-d and x3650 server which doesn't either.
> Are there any online resources that could tell me if a motherboard or CPU supported VT-D
Just google the motherboard and check the manual ctrl+f vt-d or virtualization, and you'll know pretty quickly
>>53632480
VT-d is not supported by anything before Nehalem.
