Android does have the problem with getting updates whenever it's being delegated to phone manufacturers who only want to sell more new phones. They stop caring about older models since they want to keep up with their best models.
Apple doesn't care about external competition. They only worry about people not buying their new models fast enough so they force updates to their old models intentionally making them as unusable and laggy as they can get away with.

Actually x86 is still the best cpu architecture around because it's the most energy efficient and has legacy support. ARM has neither of those things right now. Why do you think over 90% of servers/supercomputers use x86 processors?
Phones could have batshit insane good battery life if they were equipped with skylake core-M chips and energy efficient screens. The reason phone companies don't do this is because it would make phones more expensive than they already are.
