Really, Ubuntu is a pretty solid distro(sans Unity), and no matter how much people will meme you should never feel bad for using it. Linux isn't about using what everyone else says you should use. It should be about what you want and making a system that fits your needs, not the /g/ hivemind.

Switch to Debian and use Vivaldi.
Ubuntu x unity had spyware at one point but overall I've found it a good compromise between reliability and performance if you're smart about it. straight up Debian unstable is better and respects you more, and canonical sucks, but Ubuntu is not as garbage as people say. Just gotta think about what you install, which may be ridiculous to ask for some people.

If you want a completely free system then Ubuntu is not a good choice. As I said, you could choose what you want and not what anyone tells you, but if that is your goal then something like Debian is probably more your style, even if it takes a lot more effort to learn compared to Ubuntu.
Ubuntu is sort of the poster child for "we don't care about free software as much as we care about making a system anyone can use".
