If you're really on the market, you can find wonderfully inexpensive PowerEdge setups on ebay. Realistically, even ebay should be a last resort though. Keep an eye on craigslsit and ebay, sure, but if you take some time to go through your business district, you're bound to find some killer setups.

If you're only talking about the rack itself, build a poor-mans mounting system with some 2x4 and 2x2s. If you're pedantic about the "look" or "style" of it, you can always paint it black, and they're easy as heck to organize/reorganize.
Personally, I wouldn't spend more than $50 buying a used rack, and I'd need a closed system.

What are you looking for specifically? Also, sorry if this is a bit erratic, just excited to see some lab love on /g/
>>
>>53598736

Yep, I am on the market. I don't need much. I just have these three servers in use. 4U altogether, but I'd probably throw a 1U switch in there too. Want some room for growth though.

I don't really care much about the looks as long as it isn't too ghetto.

as long as there's a thread about it here, is there any such thing as a quiet 1u machine?

I'm considering rackmounting my stuff and one thing I have is a pfsense router. It is not worked hard at all - a Pentium 2 could do this thing's job. is there some rackmount system with a 5w Atom or something in it that I could use without it being noisy? You could cool that without 10k+ RPM 40mm fans, right?
>>
>>53599373
How quiet does it need to be? I'm able to run a pair of Dell R610's in a cubicle, and they're not audible above standard background noise.
>>
>>53599404
like ordinary idle desktop level. I need to be able to sleep in the same room with it.
>>
>>53599373
>pfsense

We use C2758s and they are silent if you replace the psu fan... 8core rangely/avotons, fuckin great 1U machines (we run esxi on them w/64GB RAM)

that'd be great. more than enough for my measly internet connection, actually. thanks.

How ironic.
>>
>>53599534
The fans are quiet? We have Supermicro 512 chassis at work and the squirrel cage fans are loud AF.

I actually checked out that a chassis recently, Supermicro SC505 because I though it'd be funny to cram gaming hardware into 1U and mount it under a desk.
>>
>>53599611
it can nat 1gbps... makes a great vpn device too

Yeah the psu fan is kinda loud, I replace it.

Yes, so long as you don't mind building it yourself.

Finally a thread about networking.
Need a switch with LACP (IEEE 802.1AX-2008) for a NAS link aggregation, 2-4 PoE ports and fanless or quiet, 8 to16 ports.
Any recommendations?
>>
>>53604347
Pick up a 1u and change the fans? Otherwise, HP makes an 8port that stacks on the microserver g8s.

But I doubt lacp won't get you what you want. Your drives are likely to bottleneck before your network.
>>
Has anyone tried to turn off fans in 2950 cisco switches? Those things run too loud for my room lab, i don't want to go insane while learning
>>
>>53604381
I thought LACP would help when multiple users or clients are writing to the drives. I really don't know anything about switches and their more advanced capabilities. I also have a hard time finding ones with 802.1AX, a standard from 2008, did they just change the name and nothing in the switch itself so any LAPC switch will do?
>>
I like those 4post open frame racks sadly pretty expensive to get in EU.
Startech / Tripp lite has pretty good ones.
>>
>>53604445
The drives are the limiting factor. Any lacp capable switch will work. Lacp will increase the overall link between switch and server, yes, but because of the load balancing methodology no single transfer will go above a single link rate.
>>
I hope you have somewhere to store that, I've worked with a similar PowerEdge and it sounded like an taxiing aircraft.
>>
>>53604548
Thanks. Yeah I discovered quickly that people were misunderstanding link aggregation as doubling the transfer speed with 2 Ethernet ports connected after a couple serious reviews. The NAS has 4 ethernet ports so I might as well use them to connect them to the switch, 2 pc, a tv through hdmi and PoE ip-cameras recording will write to the NAS so I hope LACP will give me some benefit over just one Ethernet connection.

Is TP-Link a respected brand? Found this one under € 100. Do you think it fits my needs?

I have a few atom laptops, can I hypervisor them into something neat?
>>
>>53604225
I have an old Poweredge that has dual P3s and no USB ports. I put in a USB PCI card and used PLoP to load linux from a flash drive.
With enough effort, literally anything will load from a USB drive.

I'm thinking about making a server rack. I want to put that crappy fake wood paneling on it and include an air filter and some sort of screen. Trick is, I can't decide if I want a dim red LED matrix or just use a screen. Any thoughts?
>>
I bought a Lenovo D20 off my school back in January. Dual Xeons but only 14gb of ram. Right now its running ESXi but I had Xenserver until 3 weeks ago. EXSi doesn't like the onboard disk controller and I can't turn it into a standard ACHI controller. Its RAID or nothing. Best of all the thing is silent as fuck. For where I have it, it beats rack cases anyday.
