What do people use Lua for besides making games?
I've heard of it being used in finance in some capacity because of its speed

Scripting applications, like it was VBA or some configuration file.
For example, Adobe Lightroom offers Lua to automate things.
This is the kind of work Lua was designed to do and not games and it shows.
Also, from time to time there is the fad to replace stand alone scripting languages like Ruby or Python with Lua which usually recedes after a period as soon as these 1337 scriptzorz find out Lua wasn't designed for that either.

Today? About 99% roblox, 1% integrated applications within C languages.
Its really useful for alot of really small things, i have a few CNC machines i operate where i work that use Lua for some reason, it works as a sort of shell to make using G-Code easier.
