Why was Oculus not capable of offering the best headset despite having Palmer Luckey, John Carmack and unlimited funding? I kinda like these two guys but it's hard to ignore the HTC Vive
>>
>>53585387
Maybe Oculus did all the heavy lifting and made it public in techtalks and then Vive just stood on their shoulders, but had the benefit of knowing about all Oculus's mistakes and not being locked in to any bad designs/deals/suppliers.
>>
Oculus was a scamstarter campaign, HTC already had real people with skills and actual production capability.
>>
Maybe they are both off the shelf OEM hardware hacked togeather and the time is right for VR.
>>
HTC looks cyberpunk as fuck I love it

Oculus was first, HTC Vive looks like a rush job with the wire coming out of the top of it. Sony will have economy of scale and they don't need to make much on them, they have a closed system.
>>
I think oculus has been more focused on the mobile vr thing they are doing with Samsung.
>>
>>53585387
>this one shill who runs around between /g/ and /v/ and constantly makes threads about vive superiority
oh fuck off already, those products are comparable and no one cares anyway
>>
>>53585387
Oculus wrongly assumed that roomscale was a meme and didnt give it much thought till the Vive showed its potential.

They simply got outmaneuvered and underestimated the competition.

Well it kinda was the other way around. Valve figured out a lot of things (two screens, 90hz, that motion tracked controls are needed for higher presence etc).

They shared almost everything with oculus until they sold out to facebook and started to develop their own app store.

Carmack works in mobile vr, which is not relevant to the rift in any degree. Palmer is nothing exceptional, just an ordinary guy who strapped something together in the right time and was lucky.

And I've been on mtbs' forums since like 2009

HTC are the ones responsible for all the shortcomings on the Vive really. They were supposed to develop a ergonomic headset with Valve's tech and they kinda failed. That's not to say the Vive is terrible in that regard but it should be better.

Apparently they did try to make a version with integrated headphones and a hard strap but their prototypes had issues so they released what they have now instead.

>>53588685
This pretty much. Valve are the true pioneers of VR here. Palmer and Carmack had no idea about low persistence and room scale. It was all guys at Valve.

You are telling med Carmack and Abrash at Oculus had no idea what to do without the help of Valve?

Abrash was at Valve.

Carmack is a programmer. He tried to make HMDs himself but it wasn't until he met Palmer that he saw a working VR headset better than what he made. Carmack admitted he had no idea about using OLED displays and low persistence until he saw what Valve was doing.

That's the Vive DK1. The consumer is a little slicker.

I'm not doubting you, but could you give me a source on this?

He said it during one of his talks early on. I think it might have been before he left id. I remember it because I felt like I was ahead of the curve since I was browsing BlurBusters a lot before the Lightboost thing was wide spread.
>>
Why buy a headset from a company with shitty customer support and a company whose hardware business has been on the verge of dying for years?
>>
>>53589708
Because Valve is backing it and it's technically superior.

Oculus has a full-fledged store with 29 games at launch and 100+ by the end of the year

A good product is not about specs, it's about the ecosystem
>>
>even considering buying any first gen VR glasses
Why are you people so retarded?
>>
>>53589893
Basically this.

As much as I hate Apple, the App Store makes it an attractive product. Nobody is blind to this.
>>
>>53590023
The Vive has Steam which is already established vs using a new store.

These games can't be played with a Vive? There won't be some way to hack them to work with a Vive?

There will be ways. People have already hacked in their own support for Oculus games running on Cardboard.

Different SDK. Won't work unless the developers fork their program.
>>
>>53590101
That article doesn't mention that what he means there is they only support headsets using the OculusSDK, so by other headsets he means like the partnership with Samsung for GearVR.

htc vive has chaperon augmented reality system, oculus has invented a new audiopipeline for windows
>>
>>53590051
About 10-15 of those games are "funded" by Oculus and will likely not be on the Vive without workarounds.
>>
Facebook owns Oculus, so they have an uphill battle, since they aren't already in the (PC/console) game industry.
Gaben's Valve owns Vive, and they've been in the game industry for years.

Apple can't deliver a product polished enough for their standards. Could you imagine an Apple product that could make people sick? Never. Maybe in 5-10 years.

There's already a workaround available on steam, runs them pretty well.

Occulus has Facebook and IMU only
HTC Vive has IMU + laser tracking

I'm sure you can extrapolate his meaning. In 5-10 years it will bet better and not cause motion sickness.

What workaround is that?
