>want to try out Linux after a life of nothing but windows
>don't play games, do some research and find out anything I do on windows I can also do on Linux
>wipe w7 from my laptop, install Linux mint

Specs are i5 2420m, 4GB ram, gt520m, 256GB ssd I upgraded myself.

>use it for a few days, it feels slower than windows 7 every did.
>eventually get tired, wipe it again and install Ubuntu
>unity is actually decent, uses less ram than windows 7 did and Ubuntu runs much smoother than windows and mint.
>decide to try out Fedora too, gnome is nice and fluid too. Install various DEs, settle on e17 for a while, only 400MB ram usage.
>despite a very nice and enjoyable, some small bugs make it unusable after a while
>install Ubuntu mate

Why is Ubuntu mate the best distro?
300MB ram usage on boot, extremely light and fully functional. Comfy and customizable DE.

And why is mint so shit?

lel you dumb faggots think this is good or something. My Gentoo install uses 12 MB when I get DWM and networking up.

Because it looked like a good idea at the time.

I haven't started a thread in a while and it looks to be pretty popular.

I'm also an avid Ubuntu Mate user and I'm happy to see you here. I like Mate interface, as much as Xfce, they are both great !

I also have mate installed on a d2500. One of the few DEs that run smooth on such a weak cpu.

also surprised that it's not as cut down as the other lightweight ones.

Install Ubuntu mate
>>
>>53580723
I skipped the part in my story where I installed it because it was already running long. Any solution? I'm thinking it's the GPU (Radeon 5770 HD) trying to scale the screen for two monitors that is causing the problems.
>>
>>53580780
Hmm.

I'm using a hd 5450 with a 1440x900 and 1680x1050 screen.

Have you looked in display settings? I had a similar problem until I tried messing around with those settings
>>
>>53578792
I actually went full retard and tried LFS. Had issues with Grub + UEFI after a couple days compiling.

I may try to build on a faster system and port over.
>>
>>53580798
I did, but wasn't able to solve it with that.

Open source or proprietary drivers?

Here's my screenfetch.

I'm using one vga and one dvi.

Can you post a screenshot so I know exactly how it looks and if I could remember a potential fix?
>>
>>53578792
>install Arch
>get everything working smoothly, except for the bootsplash, but whatever

>>
>>53580949

I tried it with both and neither solved the problem. I have an hdmi cable going to an LG smart TV and a DVI connector going to the LG monitor on my desktop. The full screen is displayed on the TV but on the monitor it is cropped. In the screenshot I just took on the monitor, the whole screen is shown, for some reason.
>>
>>53581192
Change the resolution.
I had the same problem in windows with my tv.

At 1080p it was cropped, i had to take it down to some weird resolution to make it full screen.

Have you tried changing the resolution?
>>
>>53581598
I changed it to every possible resolution to no success. However, I right now switched the monitor with a newer Samsung and it displays the full screen. Weird. I think I got the LG in 2008 so maybe its age is the problem. It's flatscreen, but it's really bulky and heavy, unlike the light, thin monitors of today.

Ubuntu Gnome is pretty sweet to me. Thinking about switching to it once the LTS is released. Arch with Gnome is pretty cool too. I love Gnome.

Fedora a shit.

It did occur to me. You going to hack me now?
>>

I know.

Mate is based off gnome 2.

No wonder it's so lightweight, still surprised that it's not gimped in any noticeable way at all.
Props to it having a good development team

More like Debian, Fedora, and Arch. Best Apt, best RPM, best rolling.
