Red Hat is a damn good distro. Not very useful on the desktop because it's very very far from the bleeding edge (Use Fedora for that). However, server wise it's stable and amazing.

In the beginning, RedHat was the first commercially viable Linux distro. Think circa 1998 or so.
The only other options were Mandrake and Slackware. I think Debian might have been a thing as well, but I don't recall. Caldara was also a thing, but it was associated with SCO, and was still-born.
CentOS is RHEL source with different artwork. I believe RedHat fully endorses CentOS.

the DoD uses red hat heavily. a lot of government sectors use it actually. i know for fact government of arizona uses red hat with a few debian machines (thought they're getting phased out).
