When did you realize that smithing is way more fun and fulfilling than sitting at a computer all day?

The cost of tooling and materials is significant, and a hobbyist will never reach professional skill level
contrast this with computer programming, where legends started in mom's basement programming on their toasters

when you realize that blacksmithing is fucking ancient. Become a machinist instead. Then you can work with metal and computers.

i knew something was fishy about that link...
It is fun, but in a different way.
My grandfather was a really good blacksmith and I spent a lot of weekends with him, learning from him.
I started by making all the tools I use and now I mostly just make an axe or a knife or something like that.
I don't have much time for it though, maybe one or two weekends per year.
It is a very different way of thinking and I enjoy it.
