Deadbeef can be configured to be pretty close in appearance/functionality to foobar. Not perfect, as far as I've been able to find.
I've heard mpd and something like gmpc would be better, but I'm apparently retarded and can't do it right.

As far as I can tell, nothing. Not a single one even supports embedded cue sheets. Also, there's a lot of inconsistency between players in how they handle metadata. Some show only certain fields correctly, some missing, some oddly breakup multi line fields into multiple entries. foobar can't be topped sadly. Maybe the android port with facilitate a linux port.

I'd love to know this. Foobar's searching for music is God. There's also converting to numerous formats, lyrics support, customizeability, ripping CDs, and more. Goddamn I miss foobar. Clementine is neat, but it's just not there.

Not as user friendly, but pretty damn good. If you're using Foobar2k in the first place, you shouldn't really expect iTunes levels of user friendliness anyway, so jumping from foobar2k to ncmpcpp isn't really that hard.

2 questions:
Do you people use an older version of foobar like i've seen somewhere else being discussed or is the latest just fine? Mine's been acting sluggish recently
Also is it true that mpd requires all music to be properly tagged to be detected/played, because I really don't feel like tagging a bunch of random shit I have thrown in some folder
