The new lxqt community edition is awesome.

Faster than lubuntu with modern gui and recent packages.
However I really dislike the icon theme, really awful.

I use Manjaro as my main os because its i3wm release is wonderful.
I don't know why there are no ubuntu official alternative with i3wm.

Just use arch-anywhere, it's much more better than shits like manjaro, antergos, architect or bbqlinux.

Hi guys. I've been hearing a lot of good things about Manjaro on here and I'm actually considering switching to it. I'm running Mint 17.3 right now, and I'm not extremely familiar with it or the terminal yet, but I have found that I can pretty easily troubleshoot everything.
Is manjaro an ok distro for beginners like me?
I definitely do not have the time or want to take the time to learn arch, but if this is a simplified version of arch I'll consider switching.

Also, is this going to be less resource intensive and faster than Mint? That's really the only reason I'd consider switching.

Great distro that is working for almost 2 years on this laptop. I'll maybe try i3wm, looks interesting.
>>

I only use Arch because ironically it took me less time to set up.

I don't know much about linux but I have some experience with Mint and I am competent enough to troubleshoot most things.

No, try one of the serious distros:
Debian
Fedora
SuSE
>>
>>53527962
And it isn't bloated trash
>>
>>53527904
Yes, I recommend XFCE. But If you want a really novice friendly then go for Ubuntu/SuSe/Fedora/Debian in that order.
>>
>>53527977
Bolat like "X" and "the gnu coreutils", right?
>>
>>53528008
Bloated like Manjaro
>>
>>53528001
I was always under the impression that open suse was pretty advanced. I've been running mint for a few months now so I'll look into suse.

tfw currently installing Arch Linux on my Thinkpad.
>>
>>53528046
I installed it on my T420 and I love it.
>>
>>53527975

Depends on what you need to use a distro for in the first place. I would not recommend Fedora to someone who wants to game on their machine as their avoidance of proprietary drivers, such as Nvidia's, can be a real hassle to Linux novices.
>>
>>53527977
>bloated
Packages: 1087

Yeah,sure.
>>
>>53527193

I use Antergos as a simplified version of Arch (no hassle install, uses all the Arch repos) and I have not seen any issues even after updating the kernel 2 times since I installed it.

Just stick to the official packages for now and you'll be fine.
>>
>>53528089
It's an 8 year old laptop. I'm not doing any gaming on it except for small indie games like cave story or braid.
>>
>>53526661

Do they offer easy configuration of iw3 or do you have to go config diving and do everything by hand?
>>
>>53528103

Not the distro's fault that a lot of packages are heavy in the dependencies...

It depends on what DE really the only difference is the package manger and AUR.
>>
How long does it take to become productive on Manjaro? I have a few hours tomorrow and I want to get rid of Mint on my laptop.
>>
>>53528366

Shouldn't take any longer than Mint.

Define "productive" in your case.
>>
>>53528510
Running LaTeX, a browser and a PDF viewer should be 95% of what I need urgently. And wifi of course. Also, should I try Btrfs?

PDF viewer is easy since most decent distros come with one out of the box.

As for LaTeX it depends on how you acquire it as I don't know whether Manjaro includes it.

https://www.tug.org/texlive/

Wifi depends on the card you have. What model of card do you have?

I don't understand, if you were so into Arch why not use Antergos?

Also the arguments against Arch usually include it being easy to break during updates against which Manjaro does nothing. This makes me think it's doubly unnecessary when Antergos exists if you are going to put up with this nevertheless.

Also what part of installation of Arch is making people give up on it? I'm genuinely curious as the difficulty is way more exaggerated.

Hey manbros
my gnome desktop takes forever to start and gdm doesnt even prop up. Im currently using lxdm to open gnome-session. Can anyone halp?
>>
>>53529090
Using Arch repositories is an advantage because this thread is dedicated for people who want an Arch Linux for human beings. I just assumed that they want Arch packages but don't want to go through the installation.

Honestly Manjaro and Antergos are the same to me with Antergos being slightly better because it's using Arch packages.
>>
>>53526625
Yes it uses you can dluse yaourt to download packages from AUR
>>
>>53529134
Except antergos doesnt have an openrc version unfortunately
Its probably more mature than manjaro Ill give you that
>>

but I think there is a arch openrc somewhere in sourcefourge. Havent tried it though nor can I be sure of its stability
