k. At least they actually have the interest to try it out. I don't see what the problem is?

Give me one good reason why Ubuntu isn't a fine OS for a college CS class.

>Unity
It's functional and can be lightly riced. Use something else if you need to fuck with every last thing. Lenses are awesome for finding what you need.
>Amazon debacle
It could always be turned off, and they removed it anyways.
>outdated packages
They're not the newest all the time, but they're perfectly fine. Use a PPA.
>>
>>53525272
>I don't see what the problem is?
Amazon spyware and the fact that it is based off Debian which drifts users torwards non-free software.
>>

I hate this fucking college, I can't wait to transfer.
>>
>>53525170
I use Xubuntu because of convenience, and gain nothing from using a hax0r distro. The inconvenience of just using something Ubuntu based is enough.

Ignore him.
The practical implications of using ubuntu is that you're using Debian with lots of bolted on UI shit written in Python all designed so you never have to look at the command line.
It actually sabotages your attempts to use gnu linux, it wants you to learn to use Ubuntu's interface, not linux.
>>
>>53525444
nice trips and vanilla Ubuntu features a line of code that reports what you type into your operating systems search bar to a server operated by the Ubuntu devs who then give that data to Amazon. In return you get recommendations for apps n shit.

This line of code is open source and can be made completely inert with one command.

Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Kubuntu and any Ubuntu version not running a version of the Unity desktop before version 8 (the latest) does not have this at all.

>>53525470
I gain almost nothing from doing this.
>>
>>53525539
except all I have to fucking do is press ctrl+alt+t and the terminal is right there, the UI interferes with absolutely nothing.

It is entirely bolted on, in fact I can completely uninstall and replace it without reinstalling the entire OS.
>>
>>53525526
Not saying privacy isn't important, just that you pretentious fucks don't really care about anything apart from being special snowflakes.
>>
>>53525170
>did you upgrade to windows 10 already?
>no, how is it?
>it's great actually
oh well, not really surprising considering that the students get the full windows package forced down their throats from semester 1.

Debian drifts users torwards non-free software? You sure about this now?
>>
In my third year, we have one google and three microsoft shills (literally) in my CS degree.
Don't know anyone that actually uses a Linux distribution. A lot of people are using surfaces with windows instead. No one understands why I use my thinkpad x220 with debian and not windows.
>>
>>53525170
When I was in CS and still a Winfag one of my group member was the "Winblows" kind of Linuxfag. People like you sure are obnoxious.

Fast forward to 12 years later - I use both Linux and Windows every day and I still don't give a fuck. Use the right tool for the job.

Open sores everyone!
This is why foss will never win when we have sellouts like these
>>
>>53525570
If you're not going to use the bolted on UI shit, why even use Ubuntu?
Just use debian.
It comes with everything you need and nothing you don't.
If you want non-free software, you have to explicitly add it to your /etc/apt/sources.conf
>>
>>53525319
Seems like you're new to uni. Using UNIX has nothing to do with ricing or half the shit /g/ talk about
>>
>>53525724
I'd use Debian if it wasn't for it's retarded release cycle.
>>
>>53525335
Not even kidding, pen and paper is the best for general note-taking. I use analog means for everything that isn't overwhelmingly more efficient on a computing device e.g. painting feces on my local neighborhood cuckspotting notice board
>>
>>53525724
>If you're not going to use the bolted on UI shit, why even use Ubuntu?

Because I do use the UI.
It interferes with nothing, a UI is much faster for certain tasks like managing lots of files or using programs not optimized for terminal, or just when I dont give a fuck.

When I roll out of bed in the morning and want to check my email I just wanna click the big fucking button to open my email.
>>
>>53525764
>muh release cycles

Just use testing or sid fucking autist
>>
>>53525764
Debian sid is reasonably updated and makes for the ideal rolling release distro because it actually receives the same security patches that trickle down to debian stable.

Debian testing is the worst of both worlds, it gets no patches, and once it gets frozen, it's basically a shitty stable.
>>
>>53525194
install arch you dumb fuck

stop using this fucking gui shit

learn how to use your system

and understand how the fucking installer works you fucking tryhard neckbeards
>>
>>53525363
The fact that you're suggesting a more outdated distro just shows how little you know.
>>
I look at my friend who installed Arch, took a week to do what I did in ten minutes with kubuntu. Same result.
>>
>>53525945
Ubuntu ships with a minimal edition you fucktard.

in fact ubuntu can be considered more customizable because it's packages are more granular.

also you won't learn shit with a binary distro, try something like gentoo, crux or sabotage.

Stop bitching about Linux distros other than the one you use, else Microsoft will keep raping us in the ass
>>
>>53526000
They don't though, only people who just started using linux or use windows believes "Microsoft rapes linux in the ass". I don't even want a year of the linux desktop because it will mean all programs start catering to lowest denominator plebs.

There is nothing wrong with ubuntu or arch but you guys are just faggots.
>>

Technically true, x86 is a intel thing, while x86_64 is owned by amd and licensed to intel
Although if they were referring to intel as the sole x86 manufacturer, that's flat out wrong
