Same here, I probably buy one new AAA-game a year and a couple of older titles. The new game is like 60 bucks but its resale value is usually somewhere close to 30 after six months. The older titles are like 15-35 and in most cases you can sell it back for the same price. On top of ~50 bucks for games, I pay for the yearly golden chains program (~30 bucks) and it gets me around 5 games a year so I'm okay with it.

I see that expression here sometimes and I hope they realize how stupid it is. When the GTX 970 first came out, people said they'd buy it to "future proof" their PCs. Now they realize that the 970 was for current gen titles, and if you want next gen titles you'll need to spend another $400-600.
CPUs have been lasting awhile, only because AMD has been in a slump so Intel has no reason to improve on their flagship. Even now, they only hope for their Zen chips "to be competitive" with mid range i5s.

PC GPU/CPU holds the same horse power that it was released. What happen is that software standard creep up over time, so older hardware loses compatibility or software becomes more demanding then year before that. The thing is that modify conf file, or computers run on low end hardware or ancient hardware.
GTX 8800 is over 9 year old but it can still run games at 1080p or 900p, which the PS3 couldn't possibly do even with optimization.
