What is the downside to the Gigabyte Brix GB-BXBT-1900?

I get you need to add some memory and a hard disk, but after that why is it so cheap?

If all I just wanted to do was my taxes, watch netflix and shop online is this the ideal computer?

no, because to do that you don't need to buy new equipment at all. Any old Core 2 desktop from a thrift store will do that. And old used Thinkpad will do that. You could buy both for the cost of this thing. The only reason you want this is because tiny things are really trendy right now. You're being a fashion victim, and just aren't recognizing it because the useless gadget you're lusting after doesn't have an Apple logo on it.

You can have an android box *with* RAM for ~$30 or so, or new Atom PC for ~$100-150 (windows license included).

Check out Mr. Know absolutely shit about anything over 'erre.

Saving five watts in CPU power is significant when you're a datacenter admin who has thousands of machines, and who has to pay twice for any power they use, since they need to be cooled. For an individual machine with OP's use case, spending more money - over a hundred dollars extra - to save a few watts is not going to pay itself back over the life of the equipment. Doing taxes, browsing the web, and occasionally watching some videos is going to leave the machine off most of the time, and mostly idle when its in use. The power differences between a used laptop and this thing in that environment are measurable but small.

If you want to be all eco-friendly about it, you also have to consider that it's always far better to avoid the huge energy and environmental costs inherent in manufacturing new gear, even if the old gear uses slightly more ongoing electricity. Reduce, reuse, recycle isn't just a catchy phrase, it's an order of preference.

Bro, if I can... BRUH.

Fucking

BRUH

That isn't even accounting for the audible noise that an older core2 machine will produce from its cooler. The small atom-based machines that cool passively can't possibly interrupt your porn stream.

Or should I watercool my cuo2duo?

I shiggity.

well the machine won't be under much of a load, like OP said, so it won't have much reason to spin up its fans, will it? Most desktop C2Ds were 65W TDP CPUs, those can be cooled easily and quietly by their stock coolers. I have a 95W TDP C2Q 6700 in the home server under my desk. I can barely hear it when everything else in the room is off, even when the machine is actually doing something.

You're just novelty-seeking, anon. You think the old stuff is bad because it's not new, and the new stuff is good because it is new. You really oughta stop that. The old stuff is, in absolute terms, really good, and it's more than adequate for the use case laid out for it.

If you wanna be a good goy and buy some new stuff because you like buying new stuff, I can't stop you. Just know that when you get right down to it, there's no real reason to.

Op here. I didn't even know these existed since today.

This is new hardware so in terms of longevity it's better than a memepad (which you suggest because it's trendy)

My IBM AT from 1984 still runs. Just sayin'.

in any case, both present-day and core-2 era hardware has at least a decade of good use left in it, due to the fact that Moore's Law has hit a wall and the speed of new stuff is only increasing very slowly if at all. And be honest with yourself, if you buy a new tiny-pc today on the grounds that it'd last longer, you'll be replacing it in three years with something new that has a different form factor because it's shiny and you've been seeing the same old Gigabyte brick on your desk for three years. You've already decided that you want this and you're looking for any excuse to indulge in some retail therapy. It won't make you happy, anon, and you'll just come back for another hit before long.

- J1900 is actually Atom in disguise
- Only one memory channel
- 1080p max output resolution

Basically, it's fine for office tasks (but so is a 8-year-old duo2cuo as the animefaggot above says), but it won't run vidya more complex than plants versus zombies or any demanding software.

A J1900-based computer with a SSD can be 100% silent. Not having to deal with fan wear and dust build-up is bretty gud.

This doesn't apply to OP's box since in a case this small, fan is likely to be active all of the time.
