History
Davis was born December 1969 and has been diagnosed with schizophrenia since the mid-1990s. Development for TempleOS began in 2003 after Davis suffered from a series of manic episodes that left him briefly hospitalized for mental health issues.

It's some legacy mode that's built into Intel CPUs. Originally those chips could only address 64 KB at a time, and you had to jump through hoops if your program was bigger. Eventually they added "protected" mode in 32-bit chips that let you access the entire memory in a simpler linear addressing format.
Oddly enough, their main competitor (Motorolla) used the simple linear addressing mode from the very beginning for their 68000 series CPU. Maybe that's why it was so popular in many computers of mid-late 80's, except for IBM for some reason. Yeah, Apple Macs, Atari ST, Commodore Amiga, NeXT workstations, old Sun workstations... they all used the 68k chips. It's a tragedy that the worst architecture is the one that became popular.
