There were better, smarter phones at the time. Why did mainstream take the dumbed down route?

Why was Symbian demonised for being too hard and complicated when both the iPhone and Android have grown to be Symbian clones?
>>
>>53514385

Because Android is a malware infested shit platform with no updates.
>>
>>53514385
because like most things that simplified the fuck out of something, it appealed to morons with too much money
>>
Aggressive marketing tailored to the technologically illiterate.
>>
>>53514385
It was the first smartphone that was actually smart.
There are still Symbian, WinMo and Palm phones out there for real fucking cheap, but you aren't using them because you know they are fucking shit compared to iOS/Android.
>>
>>53514547
People can be easily led.
>>
The iPhone is dwarfed by Android users, and why that garbage OS won out over superior alternatives was mostly just a matter of costs for manufacturers as I see it.

iOS is well engineered, as is Blackberry. It's unfortunately Android that is an irredeemable piece of trash. There is no saving it barring a complete rewrite from scratch because the foundation's trash.
>>
>>53514385
Because the reality distortion field was active.

But it's probably just a combination of heavy marketing and good design. At that time people were blown away by inertial scrolling, pinch to zoom, and turning your phone sideways makes the UI turn sideways too. They put that shit on prime time TV ads and high traffic billboards and the rest is history I guess...

As for why modern phone stuff has become like symbian then: back then android and iphone OS had a clean slate to work with, a large touchscreen with no hardware keyboard. This allowed a lot of "smart"phone features that only powerusers used to be able to figure out more accessible to dumb users while keeping things simple. The smartphone was finally smart. But as a huge corporation, you have to make sure that people keep buying your products, so you need to add new features. Do this for about a decade while keeping your old features, and you get "Symbian clones."
>>
>>53514385
iOS started out simple and added features to make it more powerful. The simplicity worked: no other OS had large, easy to understand touch targets.
>>
>>53514385
One word: Marketing.

brand recognition and the need for a cellphone that can do much much more than just communicate with people

i on the other hand am completely happy with my little burner. If you wanna look at stupid shit, go home and get on the computer, oh wait those are obsolete now

>There were better, smarter phones at the time
No there wasn't.

When the iPhone 3G launched, it hardly had any competition, and practically created the market. Pic related is what Google was thinking about launching until the iPhone kicked up a storm.

The T-Mobile G1 (the first Android phone) was trash compared to the iPhone. Hell, it was trash compared to the Sidekick LX that it launched aside of. the next major marketed Android push was the Droid X (other manufactures were still fucking around with WinMo 6.5, and believed WinMo 7 would change anything).

When the Droid X launched, Apple launched the iPhone 4 which was a better device. You also have to remember (as the /g/ revisionists will gloss over) - Android pre-Honeycomb (3.0) was a laggy piece of shit - a complaint that still carries over to this day, even though it isn't as true any more. Simple scrolling would kick in Dalvik's piece of shit STW Garbage collector and the interface was constantly stuttering. Not to mention the design and UI/UX were crap - Google hadn't got their head around mobile design, and it wasn't until they had poached the WebOS team that they got their shit together in this department.

Anyone who brushes it off with "marketing" or "reality distortion" is a child who only read about these devices on imageboards and wasn't old enough to actually own these phones.
>>
best marketing

Only samsung can come close
>>
>>53514762
I had the HTC Magic (basically the same as the G1) and loved it just because I could do emails and use Talk and type non-Latin script unlike all the other trash phones we had. The price gap between iPhone and everything else was a fairly wide one at the time.

And no, the "lag" isn't gone. Android is still the piece of shit always was for real-time performance and that will never change, even using the NDK you'll still be dependent on their fucking Java services and the garbage collector screwing up everything at will
>>
>>53514762
>Anyone who brushes it off with "marketing" or "reality distortion" is a child who only read about these devices on imageboards and wasn't old enough to actually own these phones.
Fair enough, but marketing and image are still very important things when you're selling a product, otherwise coke would stop advertising and apple fanboys would not be as rabid.
>>
What exactly is the iPhone's marketing? What did Apple actually do to market it?
>>
>>53514942
Nothing much, they create the ultimate love/hate products.
Fanboys do all the advertising for Apple.
So do the haters, they can't stop telling people how much they hate Apple.
>>
>>53514959
> apple doesn't advertise

Are you fucking for real? Or are you one of those hipster assholes that "doesn't have a TV"
>>
>>53514906
>Fair enough, but marketing and image are still very important things when you're selling a product
>Fair enough
Not even. Ever heard of the Betamax? It was a better product than the VHS tape but lost the battle due to poor marketing. The LaserDisc, precursor to DVDs, was a superior product but due to Phillips marketing and draconian controls it never got anywhere. Even Apple suffered from that with its Newton.

Writing off marketing as a concept only "a child who only read about these devices" leads one to believe that the argument is sound and been provided before but cannot be properly addressed.

>>53514762
>WebOS team
That was from HP right? I didn't know they were that impt.

free product placement
>>
>>53514980
Nokia and Sony Ericsson did 10x more advertising on TV, Radio and the internet back when the iPhone was still young.
>>
>>53514959
Where did fanboys even come from then?
>>
>>53514942
It doesn't take much to look up past advertisments, events, etc.

Why are apps so much better on the iphone than android?
>>
>had a really old regular phone
>girl at work had an iphone
>mfw when mine runs whatsapp in java and her "smart" phone can't
>girl still defends apple and kept "upgrading" her iphone

That's when i learned ppl who buy anything from apple are idiots who try to justify paying a high price for a PoS.

Also work at tech support, the idiots use apple, and the rest of idiots use windows

Enjoy you're no SD cards, shit build quality and garbage battery life. (Moto Nexus 6 excepted)
>>
>>53515529

>WHY DID THE IPHONE TAKE OVER?
It didn't.
>>
>>53515002
HP bought Palm, who had recently developed WebOS to replace their older PalmOS.
>>
>>53514385
Because it was the first consumer usable phone with a full capacitive touch screen. Windows Mobile had terrible finger support, even in 6.5. 6.5.1/6.5.3 build were a little bit better, and Microsoft added an App Store, but apple was still over a year ahead of the curve in terms of ease of use, and the amounts available.

S60 had no full-touch device at the time, it was still business model like the E71 made to competing with Blackberry, or huge brick like the N95/N96
>>
>>53514982
>It was a better product than the VHS tape but lost the battle due to poor marketing
And with "marketing" you mean "porn"...
>>
>>53518955
And Windows Mobile phone weren't cheap. The Touch HD for example, had to be brought outright at roughly a grand if not more (1500 here in Australia when it came out). Compare that to the iPhone's $200, its a lot more affordable
>>
>>53515030
I've never regretted buying any of my BMWs.

My iPhone 3g on the other hand...
>>
>>53514415
That's like enjoying life in a soviet gulag because of security.
>>
>>53518955
Plus an entire ecosystem for development that beat fucking eclipse and java me.
>>
>>53515002
I'm actually on an HP touchpad right now. WebOS was nice.

RIP.
>>
>>53515529
>no sd card
neither does iphone
>shit build quality
alright the iphone def beats nexuses on that, but I wouldn't call the build quality shit on any of the nexus devices I've owned (though I've heard bad things about the 6p)
>garbo battery
iphone battery isn't any better
