You need a couple of obscure tools but relatively easy.
You need the tiny 6-wring screwdriver and you need to be able to remove the screen. The iSclack tool is a safe way to do this if you don't mind spending about $10 on Amazon. I'd do this if you plan on opening any iPhone =>5 in the future. You can just use a suction cup but be careful not to tear any ribbon cables.
You also want a guitar pick or similar firm plastic tool. The battery is glued in pretty firmly and the only places you can lever are dangerously close to the logic board. Check the iFixit guide for the safe levering spots, be gentle but firm and take your time. Let it peel away slowly - you don't want to crunch the logic board and you don't want to stab the battery and have a fire.
Once it's out, putting the new one in is trivial. They cost about $5-10 OEM.
