Well we once had this really cool place where "hackers" would hang out, we would chat,trade software, and have a pretty good time messing with each other...and then all of the normies got on the internet and ruined it.
I hope this helps.....FYI sites like 4chan was an attempt to destroy hacker identity, hacker would try to make a name for them selves and the competition was good, now everyone is a "real person" or is anonymous.

Hacker here. Youre all wrong. Years ago hacking was about fun but there was no money in it, and everyone blamed you for causing problems and believed you could launch missles whistling into a phone and other stupid bullshit. Youd get sued about stupid shit by stupid people. So we stuck together and had intersects with other misunderstood underground subcultures, used carefully guarded handles, etc. Good times.
Now we can get really good jobs whenever we want. That makes us subject to corporate cultures and have reduces the need for our own. Conferences are businesslike and professional. Now when feds infiltrate the con, its because they are hiring not investigating. Hackers get sued way less and get on TV more.
Money and power diluted our culture. We allowed it so we could have cars and mortgages and careers and shit. Its sad but the cultures not gone, just diluted and less necessary.

Anyone with a decent technological skill set can get better money and respect going into a VC-funded startup for an app to match puppies with on-demand crowdsourced dating delivery sharing as a service.
