People who don't really deal with a lot of computers think everything just works with Windows right out of install. It rarely does.
I've had the reverse true plenty of times where with Windows I need to go get the drivers but it just works with Linux.

If I could I'd like to just simply interject for a moment. What you are referring to as GNU/Linux/X/Alsa/SysVinit is actually just a free operating system build and put forth by a number of people and groups over the last 30 years.

There really is a GNU and a Linux, and there are multiple X-servers and init systems, and these people really are using them; it's just that each of these are one component in a full operating system that started at least with the original X-server in the 82 and has been carried down by UNIX and now PC hackers cultimating in a completely free (as in freedom) OS as defined by retards.

As of late I've taken to just calling it what the distributor calls it (Debian, Red Hat) because i'm too damn lazy to compile the hundreds of components on my own.

That is all

he's right, faggot.

I've installed Windows for a fuck ton of people, from XP to 8.1 and each time after the installation finished rarely were there ethernet drivers, no wifi, graphics either.

I had to manually download them, couldn't use ethernet (in some cases the DVD drive wouldn't work.) And then use a livecd to copy/paste.

Then it's all over, I deliver to hear how much they just love windows and how easy to use it is. Yeah, once I spent 2 hours post-installation installing the BS that comes preloaded into /every/ linux distro.

Some time ago I came with the thought of trying Linux operating system. I found that board and started reading what you have to say about it.

I realized that there is more than one version of Linux and I've chosen Elive, which is apparently highly regarded by you. So, I downloaded CD, burnt it and installed that OS. It was nice that it allowed by default to keep my Windows intact.

First boot was awesome. That looked and worked very different compared to Windows, but very nice. Unfortunately, from that it was only worse. And I realized what a piece of crap Linux really is.

Why don't you have proper configuration center in Linux? I tried changing some very BASIC options (like my touchpad configuration) and I couldn't find those options anywhere. I googled and I found bunch of old forum posts and obscure wikis that mainly told me to use command line.

Really, guvs? FUCKING COMMAND LINE IN CONSUMER GRADE OS IN FUCKIN 2016??? I couldn't belive my eyes. Windows devs realize that customers want GUI and make OS that doesn't require the use of command line.

I also found out that despite being advertised as largely compatible with Windows programs Linux still can't run basic Windows programs. I spend two days trying to install my MS Office. Then, when I finally did it through very buggy emulator called "Wine" (what a name!) I found out that it makes everything look like Windows 98. Hello? 2017? 90s called, they want their skins back!

Like that wouldn't be enough, I then tried removing Linux from my hard drive and being the power user I am I went to disk management in Windows. I removed Linux partition everything went nicely, it was clean and everything. I played some CoD, switched my PC off and went to sleep. But when at morning I tried to boot my PC it turned out that Linux fucked up my Windows and I can't turn it on. REALLY? What is it? Revenge of the Shit OS? I spent whole days reinstalling Windows and I wasn't able to recover all my save games.

Linux is not for consumer grade.
Linux is not an Operating System

If you think, "Hey, i'm a fucking retard, i'll switch from Windohz to Loonix tomorrow!" Then you are in for a hard time.

The Linux kernel is a posix compatible OS Kernel, intended to be used with other components in a full (server) OS.

So, while I personally love (and need) my GNU/Linux OS, I wouldn't really recommend anything but Ubuntu to (non tech-savvy) friends and family.

So, next time you get mad about the configurations not being universal, blame the OS you are using (as Ubuntu, RedHat and Arch are very different Operating Systems, sharing only the Linux kernel, a GNU userland for the shell and some core libs. Other then that, the only thing in common is that they compile software for you.

I don't give a fuck to "salvage your innocence," stick to Windows, GNU/Linux probably /isn't/ for you. But I can say that had you installed Ubuntu instead of Elive (which, i've used unix systems for 17 years and never heard of) you would have had a much easier time. And who knows, you may still be using it today.

Faggot.

No, the Linux kernel has a fuck ton of drivers both generic and manufacturer specific. And they come pre-built in to the kernel, and the Linux kernel is older than even Windows NT (that's why it still has some old ass drivers in it).

This is why most distros can boot on just about any piece of shit hardware and make them shine, this is why you never have ethernet problems, and i haven't had a wireless card problem in ~8 years.

A lot of work goes into the Linux kernel, and Winfags are just pissed because even if we Linux guys can't run hardware to its full advantage without its particular driver we can still get use out of most any hardware. And it really isn't /that/ hard to write drivers for basic hardware like HDD's or USBs, even cameras and such.

how can someone defend this meme?

stop being an edgy kid and install windows, there no reason to use anything else when windows exist

most likely broadcom.

> install ubuntu

Makes no sense.

nope, gui is set to install by default in debian. If you did this you went out of your way to have a server and not a DE.
nice try though, faggot.

arch has latest hardware support, and isn't a difficult OS unless your a winfag and need a nice, pretty, retard proof installer.

sounds like you never tried to figure out why it didn't work and that you don't even know know why it's working now.

I've already got OpenBSD running beautifully on it. Only reason I ran Windows was because Linux didn't have the driver for the pen, turns out OpenBSD does though.

>>53503524
You don't need a special fucking driver for every flash drive. Do you really think an OS that came out in 2001 has drivers for a goddamned 64GB flash drive? No, it has a generic flash drive driver like every fucking halfway decent OS should.

>>53504054
My point was more along the lines of Windows only supports very specific hardware.

>>53510794
It just wasn't worth the time. I had arch on a CD that I wanted to install so I just decided to do that instead of throwing together a fix on Ubuntu. Arch had been running smooth for the last 14 months
>>
>>53511346
The entire point of Arch is to spend time setting it up. If you have something better to do with your time than to fiddle with OS settings, why are you using Arch?

Think of it like this:
> have a plate full of shit to eat
> no fork found
> decide to get yourself a hamburger instead
> they give you a fork
>>
>>53511370
If I'm going to spend time doing something I want to spend time on a good distro, not some Ubuntu apt-get ppa purgatory
