/g/ thinks installing Gentoo is hard or something?
>>
>>53486332
Nope just time consuming
>>
>>53486332
It actually is hard, for Winfag gaymer manchildren.

But it's not hard for normal people that know how to read a manual. It just takes way too long and it's not really worth it.
>>
It's not that hard since there are manuals and guides available everywhere. However it will take some time.
>>
>>53486412
It only takes 20 minutes to compile the kernel on an i7
>>
>>53486332
Its not. Installation is a trivial task on any distro, the only people who dont get this are Archfags.
>>
>>53486332
Have you do it? pic or GTFO

Arch is easier to install than Gentoo, and you can be done with everything and in a functional desktop environment in like 15-20 minutes.

i use arch
installation is trivial for any OS...
Fuck even Linux from scratch is trivial
how does my choice of linux distro make me less capable of installing a fucking piece of software? lol

20 minutes for ONLY the kernel is pretty bad

I didn't say anything different, but 99% of Arch elitism is based on the fact that installing it makes them feel like some kind of linux gods because hurr durr no installer.
As I said, a distro that is actually hard to install has yet to be created.
>>
>>53486667
because why would you do that
and even further fucking how do you make something so simple in any way difficult??
>>
>>53486719
I mean, there is suicide linux so why not a distro where the installation is counter intuitive and not documented.

And OpenBSD is even easier. Just keep hitting enter until it lets you boot into your OS in 10 to 20 min. From there just install whatever DE/WM you wish, and you're all set. There's no reason to make things needlessly complicated and/or time consuming. While you were fucking around compiling fucking everything, or ricing a broken system, you could have been doing something worthwhile instead, such as locating and bringing to light those mythical backdoors that someone is inevitably going to bring up, thinking that repeating years old hearsay makes people think that they are clever, or have a fucking clue.
>>
>>53486659
It used to take a whole day so it's an improvement
>>
>>53488947
I like OpenBSD, but there's three reasons why I don't use it:
1. Seems to perform consistently slower than Linux, especially when watching any video above 720p
2. I can't play a free software game on there
3. I can't use my Wacom Bamboo graphics tablet

These are 3 things I could kinda do without, but there isn't a killer feature that OpenBSD has for my purposes that I don't have in Linux.
>>

Bitch it's what your router runs
>>
>>53489006
Yea, it's definitely not for anyone who cares about performance. I usually keep some distro of Linux installed too for entertainment related stuff.
>>
>>53489169
Which explains perfectly why it comes with X, and cwm. Clearly things needed on a router.

OpenBSD is like a perfect operating system if it weren't for these things - which ironically would be fixed if more people (and thus more developers) used it.

It's a real shame that OpenBSD and the BSDs in general have been pushed to the sidelines - and I'm saying this as a GPL fan.

honestly compiling was good to do about a decade and a half ago but these days the boost is pretty negliable with todays hardware and modern software like firefox it becomes to much of a chore

Done.

Much better.

Computers are supposed to make your life easier, to bring automation to the table.

Only autists care about >muh CFLAGS, Gentoo is for people with mental disease

Linus Torvalds said Debian was too complicated for him, he didn't know how to install it. LINUS FUCKING TORVALDS, so let alone Aspergertoo

Get over yourselves fucking neckbeard scum.

So is your technical frustration gone, your life 300% better and your head underneath a fedora?
>>
>>53489418
They don't release stage 1 anymore m8, a shame too because it made a linux from scratch easy as shit. Download stage 1 cross-compiler, compile bash, coreutils, grub, kernel and init and you had a basic linux.

There were times where the Debian installer was actually pretty shitty and confusing.
Also he didn't say that he didn't know how to install it, he just thinks that something as trivial as installing and maintaining an OS shouldn't require any effort.
>>
>>53489888
Where the hell is 17 hours full time? I have 24 hours and still plenty of spare time.

>>
>>53490261
Makes sense. Still, installing Debian was just as easy if not easier than installing windows, and takes less time. Only downside being that you need an internet connection to do it without a full install already downloaded on your external drive/disc
>>
>>53486332
I always get hung up on the kernel config. I feel like I miss some important parts and something ends up not working properly after it's been compiled. Next time I try to install it I'll get it for sure
>>

lspci is your friend, or just use genkernel.
>>
>>53491662
How much slower is a genkernel at booting and in use?
>>
>>53492137
booting is obviously slower, in use you won't notice.

you forgot the part where

The previous owner of my X220T fell for the 16GB meme. Now on gentoo, portage compiles everything in TMPFS ram. A world update that includes gcc, libreoffice, and firefox takes about 2 hours. Just long enough to show your girl how much you care.
