Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Any good laptops around $150-250 that can have their CPU upgraded to an i7-3720QM later on?

How good is the T420's keyboard/trackpoint/touchpad/screen/build quality compared to a T430 or a latitude E6430? I'm going to play autism keyboardsmash games on the go with it, so if the keyboard doesn't kill my fingers by bottoming out with little force and the n-key rollover doesn't suck then it's fine.

The thinkpad T420 and T430 apparently can upgrade to an i7-3720QM (T420 needs a coreboot BIOS), but does it work well? I know that the latitude E6430 had an i7-3720QM model.
>>
>>53482363
I'd go for the E6430, it's an Ivy Bridge laptop from the start, and it's not a chiclet keyboard.

I think the keyboard on my X301 died, but I fear it may be full board failure. It boots fine, getting beep codes but cant determine what they are, and will function fine with an external keyboard. Are the Yogas actually /tpg/ approved? Because the OP clearly says
>Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™
and I am not sure if the P overrides the Yoga…
For what its worth, the last gen 14" Yogas seem to be much cheaper used than comparable X1's.
I was tempted to get one, but decided against it, because I dont really trust their keyboard.
>>
Just got a refurbished x60s, it runs at around 60C idle.

Is this normal? If not, how can I fix it?
>>
>>53484379
The P may not override the Yoga, but another thing I wanted the P40 Yoga over the Yoga 14 is the pen input. I like to draw in my free time but still have a good workstation for class work.

>>
>>53481711
It's good res but shit screen. Ended up selling my t420 to get a x220 with IPS panel. Way better screen, better battery, lighter, not a hotplate like the t420. Only thing that sucks on the x220 is the god awful touchpad. Must get use to the clit.
>>
I've read through the guide. Unless I'm blind, there doesn't seem to be a table listing models with non-shitty screens.

Is there a breakdown of the available screen resolutions for each model? I don't really care about anything else aside from that.
>>
>>53484460
Why would they do that?

"Refurbished" doesn't actually mean anything, it's just a normal used laptop.
>>
>>53484967
15" models are where to look for good screens. W series in particular have very good color accuracy, but they all go up to 1920x1080 (1920x1200 prior to T510, and 1600x1200 IPS prior to T61).
>>
What linux distribution doesn't affect the t420's trackpoint. Ive used mint and the trackpoint and the middle button to scrow don't work.
>>
>>53484411
>>53484443
The main heat problem on the *60 generation was the wireless card Lelnovo chose, they run hot as fuck for some reason. Find a whitelist BIOS and replace that shit.
>>
>>53485122
What? How old is your kernel? New stuff should work out of the box, but try
xinput set-prop "TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint" "Evdev Wheel Emulation" 1
xinput set-prop "TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint" "Evdev Wheel Emulation Timeout" 200
xinput set-prop "TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint" "Evdev Wheel Emulation Axes" 6 7 4 5
xinput set-prop "TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint" "Evdev Wheel Emulation Button" 2

which was the way for older distros.
>>
>>53485086
Thanks.

I'm not very concerned about colour accuracy if I'm going to be running terminals and vim. However, I am looking to spend as little as possible aside from the screen, so W series might be a bit pricey (and hard to get down here).

Any suggestions from the T-series, or hell, any other laptops? I'm even considering first-gen retina macbooks for the screen alone.
>>
>>53484379
Yoga = X series tablet with a fancy hinge.

T510 is probably your best bet for price. Since the T520 is pretty much the same thing but better, that's the one most people are going to look for, and the T500 is 16:10 so it attracts the autists who need that. T510 is left relatively unwanted and cheap.

Normally I have it set to turn off and only use the external screen, but it is possible to use both at the same time. The GPU doesn't like that though, the internal screen becomes very unresponsive if you try to do anything on it. Even typing gets delayed.

>>53488666
I guess the dock port is able to carry a signal back to the internal display. I'm not really sure how it works, honestly. You can't find any documentation on this thing, even on Lenovo's site it seems they want to pretend this never existed.

If I limit the upper charge threshold with tp_smapi to 80%, what happens when I keep the charger plugged in?
Will it switch to the battery, drain it back to 79%, charge up to 80% and keep doing that forever or will it permanently switch to the AC power supply for work? I seriously hope it's not the former, because it sounds kinda wasteful.

The best upgrade you can do is the SSD, you aren't going to notice a significant difference between p8700 and p9700. I wouldn't bother with it unless you had money to blow and were redoing the thermal paste already.

>>53491356
My main e6400 has the T9550 2.66 35W and it's great, I nmay upgrade to the T9900 3.06 with the same wattage or the P9600, which is just like a T9550, but with a 25W TDP, the best chip for power and energy.

The yoga 14/ yoga 460 has a 940m, and is essentially a slightly gimped (i5 vs. i7) p40 for ~$575 less.

The Quadro 500M and 940 both are 28nm, 30W, 384 shader core Kepler GM108 GPUs. So unless you really get your dick hard for certain pipelines that could take full advantage of the quadro, or are deadset on having a slightly higher quality CPU for that much, I frankly do not see why the "P" branding is so important.

On the other other hand, I do not like the control key/keyboard layout on Mac especially as I use these a lot in art programs. Also generally a lot of shit isn't compatible on Mac, namely more obscure art programs/games.

Had pa trying to talk me out of the XPS, asserting that Dell is shit according to his PC repair guy and that everyone he knows at his land sales business uses a toshiba or an "apple macintosh."

Get the Dell.
>Maybe having one windows and one mac is beneficial somehow?
No.
I used to have a MBP.
After years I still was less productive on it than I was on my desktop computer with Windows on.
>>
>>53500567
The Dell is fully user serviceable.
The Macbook is not.

As a rMBP owner debating the viability of $900 of 'repairs' because the whole fucking internals are glued and soldered together, this will definitely influence my next laptop purchase. Go with the Dell.

Shame the Dell battery is only rated for 300 cycles vs the MacBook battery which is rated for 1000 cycles.
>>
>>53500809
yes but you can actually remove the battery from the Dell and replace it

https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Dell+XPS+13+Teardown/36157

You can also upgrade the SSD and wireless hardware, but like the Mac, the CPU and RAM are soldered on.

warranty shmarranty, don't buy something you can't fix yourself.

Still, it's pretty inexcusable to put in a battery that lasts for 300 cycles in a 2016 high end laptop when Apple has been doing 1000 cycle batteries for years now.

>Buy Thinkpad X220 tablet
>Great condition, works perfectly, upgrade to 8GB of RAM
>Somebody jammed a too big hard drive in there and it won't come out

Holy shit.. I'm probably going to need to dissemble half the laptop to fix this problem.

having some weird thermal issues after dropping the C2D-T9600 in my Lifebook T5010, which is odd because it's an OEM-supported configuration.

Arctic Silver was applied to both these machines. The T731 is incredibly happy, clocking itself up to 3GHz and running Whiplash almost as smooth as my 1st-gen i7 desktop, with much lower temps than it did before.
The T5010 ends up at TJmax in about 5 minutes and throttles itself into uselessness.

Seems like either T9600s just run ridiculously hot (according to googled anecdotes), or the heatsink isn't completely down on the CPU. If I tighten those screws any more I'll fucking strip 'em, so idkwtf.

woo, just dropped VID to 1.05 and now max temp under load is ~80c and stable. Guess the heatsink is fine.

any good laptop under $264 that can get upgraded to an i7-3xxxqm 45W? send help

has anyone upgraded their T430 to a 45W quad core CPU? It's the only reason why i'm leaning towards a latitude e6430

if i get that 3d printed adapter that lets you use a thinkpad nub in a latitude, would that make the pointstick feel better?
>>
>>53503281
I know a few good ones but they start at $265. Sorry.

So I've just found out that all Thinkpads have ass displays in terms of colour (reproduction which I need for my photoshop work).
Any alternatives recommended that are <$900? I've seen Latitudes hit >90% which is nice to see
