6 pin pci-express power cable - 75 watts
8 pin pci-express power cable - 150 watts
pci-express 16x slot - 75 watts

>reference 980
2x 6 pin pci-express power cables = 150 watts of power
pci-express 16x slot = 75 watts of power
total power = 225 watts

if a single 8 pin pci-express slot provides 150 watts of power why use 2x 6 pins instead of a single 8 pin?

Have you ever made a graphics card?
>>
>>53459494
so why is using 2x 6 pin pci-express cables that provide a total of 150 watts of power better than using a single 8 pin pci-express cable that provides 150 watts of power?

>6 pin pci-express power cable - 75 watts
>8 pin pci-express power cable - 150 watts
I've never understood this.
The two extra pins on the 8p version are just grounds.

But that's the rating?

>>53459814
Yes.
That doesn't make it any less dumb.

The extra grounds allow the other wires to safely carry more current.

In any case OP PCI-E power lines can be overdrawn 30%. Two 6 pr one 8 pin could provide 180w continuously.

>two six pin or one eight*
>>
It could have to do with power supply support or something weird like that but im no expert
>>
>>53459465
6 pins are not limited to 75w. Modern 8 pins are just 6 pins + 2 grounds. Each pin is made out of 16~18 awg cable, where they are each capable of carrying from 3~1.5 amps. Multiply that by the number of pins and you got your maximum amperage. You're a big boy and so I'm sure you can Google how much amperage * 6 * 12v is.

Different max currents. The 8-pins are rated for 4.167a due to the 2-extra grounds. Believed that the grounds add additional safety allowing for a higher current.

Safety and efficiency.
Anytime you can get away with smaller numbers (even if it's more smaller numbers) in electricity, the better. As well, it allows the power-handling on the board to handle each circuit separately for the sake of safety and electrical noise-suppression before feeding the power to the components that need it.

Also heat dissipation. Manufacturers like seasonic cheap out on connectors and they melt after a certain amperage.

Ironically they bundle their 6 pin to 2x 8 pin with their psus. People use them with power hungry amd cards and after a while they melt.

oooo ok that makes sense. thanks

Follows the "smaller numbers are better" logic. Less amperage draw over the same gauge wires is always better, even if you have to use more wires. Safer.

source?

The extra two pins on an 8-pin are literally useless, they're pretty much here just to confirm that the PSU is strong enough.

You can pull 150watts from 6pin safely in any modern decent PSU, about 88watts from the PCIe slot without melting if you motherboard can push that much power not that you should anyway.

yeah seriously, what >>53460390 said.
Seasonic has always been the best in terms of longevity and clean power from what I heard. Shit it was the main reason why people moved away from the corsair cx 430 a few years back because they stopped subcontracting from seasonic. Corsair had to design their own PSUs (like the cx 430) so they ended up sucking for psus
