Just use a recommended, free(Libre) GNU+Linux distro and use system monitor to see how much memory is in use.
also, use netstat -a in a root terminal to see connections..
Most malware these days is because of unsafe browsing on the internet, so use a firefox fork or firefox and secure it by modifying the about:config.

No. Keep UAC enabled (you can lower it one notch from default to 2/4 to not dim your screen), use a hosts file ( MVPS: http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm ), use uBlockOrigin in your browser, and you should be fine. Probably with these settings most malware will not even make it's way in your PC, let alone execute without your knowledge..

I work at a repair shop. AV software is literally worthless. If you're tech illiterate and dumb enough to click on shady websites and download stuff without checking what it is you're actually downloading, and don't take the necessary precautions as >>53451738
states, malware WILL get in regardless. Most of our clients bring us shit that's infected as fuck even though they have AV software installed. Most of them ask how it can be possible to have malware even though they have an AV.
tl;dr: AVs are mostly placebo. Take precautions, don't be a dumb fuck, and if something does get in, just run MalwareBytes.

If you use your computer for critical work, then yes you absolutely need an antivirus.
The best is BitDefender or Kaspersky.
