On what does /g/ listen music ?
I've tried this FLAC thingy, but I can't tell the difference between FLAC and 320kbps MP3.
I am using built-in laptop speakers (which is probably why I can't tell the difference) and Android phone with some good earphones.
Is FLAC worth your HDD space ?
Should I convert to .ogg and be open-source guy or listen to .mp3 and stay pleb ?
>>
>>53447147
Mp3s are literally fucking fine
>>
>>53447409
Why don't we make .ogg a thing since it's open-source ?
>>
Mp3 is deprecated.

Opus master race.
>>
>>53447147
.mp3 is fine for built in speakers. Hi end headphones the limiting factor is probably your DAC.
Use flac for archiving, burning music cds or hifi audio.

Just converted my FLAC album to Opus to try this out.
Results :
>FLAC - 362MB
>MP3 - 110MB
>Opus - 23MB
Bow down to the master race
>>
>>53449530
Opus 128kbps vbr is the sweet spot imo
>>
>>53449573
I'm impressed by this thing. Both good quality ans compression.
The only thing is my stock Android player on Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 (Android 2.3.6) doesn't open it.
>>
>>53449643
Gonemad, Aimp, Neutron, VLC and Poweramp alpha can reproduce Opus.

Dunno if any of them are compatible with 2.3.6 though
>>
>>53447147
ATH-IM02. I don't have a proper dac+amp now, they can behave real weird when hooked to my phone/laptop. Mp3s are fine as long as they are at least 192. The easiest way to check whether is FLAC worth it for you is paying attention to highs. Like, how good cymbals sound. 320/v0 botch them a bit and lower bitrates just destroy them. But converting is never worth it. Everybody has plenty of space nowadays, why deliberately lower the quality even if the loss is "negligible"?
>>
>>53447147
FLAC to ogg - sane.
Mp3 to ogg - insane.
>>
>>53449691
VLC works. Thanks, buddy.
>>
>>53449828
I don't have that much free space atm, but yeah, I should just buy some microSD card or something :D
>>
People who say they can hear the difference between 320kbps MP3 and FLAC are the same people who say they can hear de difference between a 10$ an 100$ cable.
>>
>>53449867
what would you call ogg to FLAC ?
i remember a post of an anon's sister that did this because she wanted better quality kek
>>
FLAC isn't worth the space to me. I've been using mp3 and ogg since the late 90s.

The files are all still just fine. I don't need hipster bloatshit to enjoy my music.

the human ear literally cannot hear the difference in quality between a properly encoded MP3 and an alternative filetype.

I have a tiny collection of 1300 songs in mp3 320 kbps. Worth converting to opus?
>>
>>53450759
what do you mean by "worth" ? it only takes 2-3 lines of bash to do that if that's the problem
>>
>>53450759
You'll save tons of space if you need it. You can use Clementine for that shit, and just delete FLACs with terminal later.
>>
>>53450759
>mp3 to opus
nigga what, only lossless to opus.

very true , but a subwoofer wont' be able to reproduce some of the low/high - pitched audio frequencies
who knows maybe one day we will be able to analyze and find ghost voices singing along the song.
>>
>>53450759
No. Never convert mp3 to another format. It's like making a photocopy of a photocopy, the loss in quality will be very noticeable.
>>53450168
There are a rare few albums that don't sound good in any lossy codec. Kraftwerk's The Man Machine is a good example. But the real point of flac is that you keep it on your computer, where space isn't a big concern, and transcode it to whatever format and bitrate you like for your phone, where space is an issue.

A very good point.

a player like blackplayer is a lot more versatile, and customizable.
>>
>>53447147
I like having FLAC files for archival purposes, though to be truly honest, any increase in perceptible audio quality that they offer is extremely minor at best, and even then it may just be a placebo. MP3 320 is usually good enough for me.
>>
>>53457168
Doesn't support Opus.
>>
hardware doesn't support most other formats, therefore mp3 is the most viable for portable listening
/thread
>>
>>53447147
MP3 unless the album I'm looking for only comes in FLAC.

It's what I find on torrents.

The best format is Opus, though, and if we could switch to that, that'd be great. But I'm not going to be wasting time looking for FLAC versions to later transcode.
>>
>>53458852
Android supports Opus, Portable Music Players with rockbox also support Opus and dunno about iOS but it probably does too.

A good old 2009 Classic 160gb Ipod

The battery is basically dead though it runs out in less than an hour and I can't find one nowdays, and the clerk basically laughed at me for asking if they had one for my "relic" at the apple store.

Speaking of which, since we are here, There's this old Ipod around that got in the middle of a fight and I think onlye the HD is broken.

What would be a better idea?
Transfer the battery from the broken Ipod to the one I use, or transfer the HD from my working Ipod?
>>
>>53449530
>>53449573
How exactly is Opus so good? How does it compress that well while retaining quality?
>>
>>53461360
It's a big format.
>>
>>53461360
It keeps quality better than MP3, I've compressed 7GBs of FLAC into 250MB. Plus it's open-source format. The only thing is that you'll need slightly better processor because it's way too compressed.
>>
>>53461397
For you
>>
>>53461207
I would transfer the battery unless the other Ipod is a lot more powerful. I don't know much about Ipods tho

Does it requite better cpu performance and therefore consunes more energy? And if yes, is worth saved hdd space?
>>
>>53448452
that's a good idea, but i think its because mp3 performs better playing back and all.
>>
>>53463876
of course it is, you could convert 100gb of flac while your laptop is plugged overnight

so does flac

I think he's asking if it takes more battery life to play them on his phone.
>>
>>53447147
Flac is snakeoil. The only reason to keep a library of flac files sitting around is if you think you ever might need to transcode between lossy formats.
>>
>>53451178

>>53450951
Thanks
>>
>>53465378
You couldn't tell the difference between a 320kbs mp3 and flac if your life depended on it
