So techs,
If you had an LGA775 X38 motherboard with all the other components but the CPU, what quad core processor would you look to buy today, now that the Core 2 generation is ended? For a solid all purpose and no over clock in mind. You would look for what model, even used cpus?
Pic somewhat related.

cheapest available quad-core. Which will probably be a Q6600. Q9xxx chips still trade at a premium, since they're the best thing you can put in a 775 board.
8200

I have a maximus formula (x38 afaik). Currently using a q6600 at 3.6ghz. I would look for a modded bios to support 771 cpus and a modded xeon X5492 to fit in the lga 775 socket which is the best combo that you can have right now. Only problem is they come at the same price the top 775 cpus have.

LGA771 pin mod, get a Xeon off eGoy for $15 (x5650 or the like) that is the server version of something like a Q6600 etc for a fraction of the price. Profit.

Xeon X5470
>>53380454
Xeon X5470/X5460 if you want to OC, E5450 if not. Throw away those Core2Duos.

>x5650
That's first Core-i-generation/LGA1366
>>53380454
I just stripped down six lga775 motherboards for all their gold components. Then I pulled all that gold, melted it down, and made an AMD pendant for my chain.

Pic or bullshit.
Where did you get these motherboards?
Literally impossible, and expensive to find.
>>53380454
whatever is the best xeon it supports. fyi x38 doesn't support the 5xxx series xeons, only the 3xxx series.

What would the best xeon 3xxxx be? And in any case would it be any better than the non server cpus from that age?

do you carry a magnifying glass with you for when bitches ask what that little shiny booger hanging off your neck is?
>>53386219
not sure, i'm still on lga 775 but i've got a p43 so i never looked into the 3xxx. the site i linked should have plenty of info on it. i know that the high end 5xxx were mostly just better binned core 2 quads, not sure about the 3xxx.
>>53380454
If just you want cheap moar cores, look at a G34 board. Opteron 6128 8 core CPU's go for ~$10.

anyone has x5460 to tell overclock capabilities?
I use q8400 on my funposting machine
>>53391183
I'd love to overclock mine, but the G31 chipset I'm stuck on doesn't co-operate with clockspeeds over 350. People report being able to get 3.8+ GHz on better boards easily.
>>53392206
whats the max multiplier on x5460?
>>53392585
It's 9.5
I have a e8400 which does mostly everything and you can get those for around 7 euro.
also considering an upgrade to a xeon e5450 , would cost me 30 euro (and some messing around with bios to update microcodes), do you think it would be worth it?
would the difference be noticeable?
