My white noise machine uses a fan instead of a speaker. You adjust the volume and the sound by changing the # of vents + diameter

even if the smartphone will sounds the same ( and it probably won't, a $10 clock radio probably sounds better than your smartphone )

I feel like there's a certain sense of ritual with a dedicated device? you interact with your smartphone all day, so using it before bed isn't a really great way to get to sleep.

Climbing into bed and turning on a white noise machine with no display is probably a better way to get used to going to sleep.

I've yet to find a white noise app or machine that works better than just turning on a stand up fan and pointing it at the wall if you don't want the cool air.

My PC makes perfect white noise.

So nice to fall asleep to.
