I believe since an OS is the most crucial software on a device, it should be free and transparent. We should be allowed to see everything happening behind the scenes, without having to go through 90 pages of terms and agreements and interpret them for every single possible scenario.
If the OS is not transparent, you stop owning your own hardware.
If MS will ever open source Windows (150% doubt it), I would have absolutely no problem using it because it's really not that bad (despite some of the most fucked up bugs I've ever seen and can't do a thing about without contacting some Curry Center).
