There's not much manual work (well except lots and lots of typing) but it doesn't require advanced degree. Literally anybody can pick up an intro book, do some online course or whatever, and bam, they're a programmer. Especially give the way things are today (almost nobody writes their own linked list or binary tree implementations, they just use some library).
